***OFFICIAL*** 2013 STL Cardinals Thread

From Bernie's column:

People have asked me why we’re not more emotional,” Matheny said in his office after Sunday’s game. “They say that we look subdued, always intense. That our actions are methodical, robotic at times. That’s what got us here. This isn’t the time to change it.”

It’s hard to argue with the manager’s assessment. The Cardinals finished with 97 victories, most by a Cards team since 2005, and tied with Boston for No. 1 in the majors this year.

Their 54-27 showing at Busch Stadium matches the 1985 team for the best single-season home winning percentage (.667) by the Cardinals since 1944.

A postseason theme has emerged, and it echoes the mantra that surfaced before the start of 2013: remember the fall of 2012. Remember falling to San Francisco in the NLCS.

The Cardinals’ veterans still haven’t forgotten. They still aren’t over it. It’s why Matheny resists GM John Mozeliak’s urgings to smile and put on a happier face.

Here's the most impressive aspect of the Cardinals' division championship: they prevailed over two other outstanding teams, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

The 97-win Cardinals were better this year (regular season) than they were in 2011, when they won 90 games, and 2012, when they won 88.
Here are a few numbers that help put the Cardinals' Central title and No. 1 NL seed in perspective:

* Since MLB switched to a three-division format in each league in 1994, this was only the sixth time that a division had three 90-plus win teams. St. Louis won 97, Pittsburgh 94, and Cincinnati 90.
* Since the format change, this was only the second time that an NL division had three 90-win teams. In 2002 the NL West had Arizona (98 wins), San Francisco (95) and Los Angeles (92).
* The 2013 Cardinals faced more esteemed and difficult competition at the top of the division than any of the division-winning teams managed by Tony La Russa.

The Pirates were hardly pushovers; the Cardinals had to work like mad and kick in with a strong finish to put the division away, and didn't clinch until Game No. 160.

The Cardinals went 9-10 against Pittsburgh this season and were 11-8 vs. Cincinnati.

The Cardinals won only three of 10 games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and split the 10 games at Cincinnati. The Cardinals were 6-3 against both teams at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals (1st), Pirates (3rd) and Reds (5th) ranked among the top five in wins in the NL. The three teams were among the top 11 in wins in MLB. All three teams finished in the top five in the majors for best overall ERA, and each were in the top five MLB for best starting-pitching ERA.

The original purpose to this piece was to point out that the Cardinals managed to finish with the league's best record while competing in a division that had three 90-win teams for only the second time in the last 19 years of National League baseball.

The Cardinals really earned this.
Thanks for reading ...
— Bernie

So, Hamas brought it up the other day and I've been thinking about it recently. Jimmy Rollins is about all there is out there at SS, that I would even think about going after.

Unless, you want to talk about going all out, he's about the best option (which isn't great, but if he's healthy, he'd be about what we would need).

Someone mentioned that Taveras is playing everyday, or was before the DL stint, in CF. I think the writing is on the wall there.

well not completely. He has one bad inning and then gets it together.

He has never been a "Garcia headcase" in the past. Maybe its a mechanics issue and can't get it back together. His pitches were coming in belt high. Your going to get smacked around.

That's the regression to the mean WRT RISP.

Freese hit that bell well, so I'm not going to crucify him; Trumbo just made a great defensive play. There's no way Pujols gets to that.

Adams' at bat was truly pathetic. I know that Downs is hell on LHB, but he couldn't pick the ball up out of his hands at all and was fanning on sinkers that were low and significantly inside.

This is why power is important. We are near the bottom of the league in HRs, and thus need to string together multiple hits to score. When the team hits .330 w/ RISP it's easy to do, but once they start heading back to Earth in that dept runs will need to come from another source, and the power outage from Freese, Holliday, and Craig (although he's heated up lately) has really hurt us there.

At least the bullpen has stabilized. 11-15 is too long a streak to be considered a "funk" anymore. But, we still have 1/2 the season to get our starting pitching on track.

I'm beginning to really really hate Jay. It looks like he is back to moving that bat all around and taking bad at bats. Kozma kicking at the dirt after every pitch. Delcaso hitting .200. Wigginton is a disaster. Robinson has no place on this team except as a pinch runner. Someone needs to step up to take the place of Holliday's declining production.

We have a good core. Someone outside that core needs to step up.

I think Westbrook could be trade bait. As good as he was before the injury is as bad as he is after. Oscar Tavaras probably would have been brought up already if it weren't for a lingering ankle injury. Carlos Martinez is a possibility to be called up to replace Lynn in the rotation. The Cardinals have plenty of options in both the majors and minors. I don't see any of the pitchers being offered on the trade market as being a step up.

What value would he have? He's not exactly the protypical rental player. The way he has pitched since he came back, what could we get? I don't see how he has any value.

Martinez may be called up, but I seriously doubt it will be for Lynn unless something unforeseen occurs. Both Miller and Lynn have regressed from their great starts. That was to be expected to some degree. I will take my chances with our top 3 right now, it's 4 and 5 that concern me. They are the difference in giving you a chance to win a 3 or 4 game series consistently.

Why in te titty **** have we had Kozma in a 1 and 2 and no out situation twice, and not bunted once?

And to exasperate that, on a guy that just walked a guy on 4 pitches and hit the next guy, we hit and run on the first pitch?

The outfield of Craig, Trout and Taveras will look good with the birds on the bat in a few years when the Pujuls and Hamilton deal allows Trout to leave.

Poetic justice?
