Shooting at Arrowhead- Chiefs player commits suicide

No details yet. Just came across on the news.

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

Goodell is going to try to show up David Stern's stupidity, it looks like.

Although if the players want to play, go for it. It should probably be up to them. I don't think the game should be postponed permanently... but they've moved games around for hurricanes before. I get the amount of money involved. They could move it to Monday night, or even Monday afternoon if they want. The game is going to be like a funeral anyway. The fact that this happened at the team facility and in front of the people who are involved in this game makes it a different beast.

Jesus. This was the 2nd murder-suicide within the organization in the last 3 months. I never heard about this one.

http://www.bobgretz.com/chiefs-footb...r-suicide.html

Quote:
On Labor Day, an employee of the Kansas City Chiefs was involved in a murder-suicide shooting in Tampa, Florida.

Luis Angel Roberson Rodriquez worked in the Chiefs stadium operations department. He had previously worked at Disney World in Orlando and had joined several other Disney expats with the team’s stadium operations.

On Labor Day night, Rodriquez killed himself after shooting his on-again, off-again girl friend Jamie Kristine Kimble near the Tampa International Airport.

A little before 8 p.m. EDT on Monday, September 3 Kimble was returning from a trip to London where she was apparently visiting a new boyfriend. She was met by Roberson Rodriquez. The two began arguing almost immediately, but left the airport grounds together in a car driven by Roberson Rodriquez. Witnesses said Rodriquez punched Kimble several times with his fists while they were in the vehicle.

Kimble jumped out of the car on Cypress Street near Westshore Boulevard just southwest of the airport. That’s when Rodriquez shot her multiple times as she ran away. He then drove a short distance away and shot himself, later dying at a Tampa hospital. Kimble was dead on the scene.

While acknowledging he was an employee of the team, the Chiefs had little to say about the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and our thoughts and prayers are with the families involved,” the team said in a statement. “The organization will have no further comment out of respect for all those impacted.”

The 31-year old Kimble lived in Holmes Beach, Florida, an island community due west of Bradenton. She was a North Carolina native and the daughter of Ron Kimble, currently the deputy city manager of the Charlotte, North Carolina. Kimble graduated in 2002 from the University of North Carolina and worked in sales and marketing for BYB Brands, a subsidiary of Coca Cola. She was preparing to move to Dallas after being promoted to director of regional sales for the southwest.

Roberson Rodriquez was 39 years old and was from the Orlando area.

TAMPA — Luis Roberson Rodriguez and Jamie Kimble had been dating on and off for years, police say, and on Monday, he picked her up at Tampa International Airport.

Kimble, 31, was returning from London, police say, where she had been visiting a new beau. Soon after she arrived in Tampa, she and Rodriguez, 39, started arguing. Investigators are not sure what the fight was about, only that it ended at about 7:45 p.m. in the West Shore area, when Rodriguez punched Kimble several times in the car.

She jumped out of the vehicle, and then, police say, Rodriguez shot her several times. He drove down the street, did a U-turn and shot himself in the head, police say. Both died at the hospital.

Investigators are calling it a murder-suicide and are investigating. Autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday.

Kimble lived in Holmes Beach, and Rodriguez was from Orlando, authorities say, though it appears he recently moved to Kansas City, Mo.

She attended the University of North Carolina, records show, where she made the dean's list.

Friends and family gathered at Kimble's family's North Carolina house Tuesday. They declined to comment, as did Rodriguez's family in Orlando.

Chiefs player involved in apparent murder-suicide at team facility

Tragedy struck in the NFL early Saturday morning with the news that a Kansas City Chiefs player committed suicide at the team's Arrowhead Stadium practice facility, after shooting and killing his girlfriend at home a short time earlier, SI.com has learned.

The player who shot himself is fourth-year linebacker Jovan Belcher, 25, Kansas City police have confirmed. There are no other known injuries at the Chiefs facility.

The Chiefs released a statement saying: "We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.''

According to police, Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend, 22, at home around 8 a.m. CT, with the woman's mother present and a witness to the murder. Belcher then drove to the team facility, where he later shot and killed himself in the parking lot of the team complex, in front of GM Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel, as well as other team personnel. A KCPD spokesman said Pioli and Crennel tried to talk to Belcher, who thanked the men before taking his life. Belcher and his girlfriend had a three-month-old child.

The Chiefs (1-10) are scheduled to play at Arrowhead Stadium Sunday at noon CT, against the Carolina Panthers (3-8). One league source in the NFL office said officials were still trying to decide Saturday morning whether the game will be played on Sunday as scheduled. He said his guess was that the game would not be postponed or canceled, due to the complications of when to re-schedule the game in the remaining weeks of the season, or how a cancellation might affect the other 30 teams in the league in terms of competitive fairness.

"There is a ripple effect,'' the source said. "It's not simply two teams affected here. I'm not sure in recent history we've ever just canceled a game. But what's under consideration are all the factors involved if they don't play, when do they play? It's a pretty tight schedule to try and make a game up at some later point. These things have to be thought through. Nobody wants to play a football game right now if you're a Kansas City Chief, but what does that do to the other 30 teams? It gets a little complicated from a schedule standpoint and a competitive standpoint.

The league source said the NFL did not feel it was mandatory to make a decison in regards to the game before Carolina boarded its mid-day flight to Kansas City. "If the Panthers have to fly back from Kansas City without having played the game, it's not that big of an issue to deal with,'' the source said. "We'd rather take the time to think through all the ramifications.''

Kansas City mayor Sly James said that he's spoken with the Chiefs, who believe the game Sunday should be played.

Belcher was a fourth-year reserve linebacker who went undrafted out of the University of Maine in 2009. He signed with Kansas City as a collegiate free agent after the draft. As details of the shootings continue to come in, a Chiefs team source said Kansas City officials are still in the early stages of dealing with the tragedy.

Your first 2 sentences are contradictory. If the NFL cancelled or postponed the game right away, the players don't even get a say in it. They have to proceed as if they will play, and give the players a chance to figure out what they want to do.

could the chiefs just tell goodell to go fuck himself on this whole playing tomorrow? i mean obviously the team would be incredibly fined, but not as much as the lost revenue of just delaying it a day.

This is so sad. Not a huge fan of Belcher, but he was a member of the family I love, that being the Chiefs.

When ESPN finally released his name, I literally started crying. I feel horrible for the families of the victims, especially the child left behind.

Not sure how I feel about Belcher. I feel sorry for the man and what was going on in his life to lead to this, yet I am outraged by his actions

What a horrible day.
