Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

Everywhere I looked, listened, and read, the true fan mating call was "fix the o line, and trade for Alex Smith".

I've seen a pretty mixed review.... somewhere between 40-60% either way I would guess. I guess it's just the matter of who are the one's getting season tix.

Usually I just hear "At least he's better then Cassell". So I don't know if the spike would be because we got Alex Smith or if it's because we are starting anyone but Cassell.

I still say Reid is the reason 80-90% of the people would renew though.

I think the problem is Can Alex be post Harbaugh on a team that doesn't have the talent the 49ers do?" What's going to happen when he is asked to shoulder more of the load?

shakes head. i have no idea. I honestly dont. thats the question. And admittedly, thats why even though i like to argue a bit, im completely understanding of the guys who hate this trade.

I just hope andy knows what he is doing, and this isnt some reach move. I know dilfer said andy has liked alex since he was drafted, but sometimes, the grass is always greener on the other side.

Kinda like that girl you always like from afar, and then you get with her and realize shes nothing like you expected

Realistically? At least an AFC Championship game appearance. That and Geno Smith/Matt Barkley have to bust and be worse than Smith. If Smith is average over the next two years and Geno Smith/Matt Barkley become top 15 QBs.....then this trade was a failure.

thats fair enough. Obviously that changes a little bit if the chiefs do draft one of those. But yeah, i cant argue with it. I personally think with the moves the chiefs are making, the afc being weaker, the afc west being light besides the , that the playoffs should be realistic this year, and anything less should be a disappointment. And if that is the case, that they dont, then the trade is a failure.

He needs to be better than every QB from this class.

If that's the case, a playoff appearance would be enough for me to consider it a successful trade on its own. However, the Chiefs would have to be continuously scouring for a replacement for him for me to be pleased with their handling of the position if the best he can do is a playoff appearance.

It really is an opportunity cost issue and nothing more.

Here's the deal....and this is completely realistic.

The teams to beat in the AFC are as follows right now.

Top Tier: Denver, New England, Baltimore
Above Average (Always Competing): Pittsburgh, Houston, Cincinnati
On the Rise: Indianapolis

That's realistically 7 teams that are going to be fighting for 6 spots. You can maybe (with Alex Smith) put Kansas City in the On the Rise section. Even if the Chiefs somehow get into a WC spot.....they're going to playing a team like Baltimore, Houston Or Indy. That's a tough game on the road to have to win.

the beauty of that, is that the afc north is so strong, they will beat the hell out of each other. i dont think that three will make it. obviously the draft and free agency have a lot to say about these things.

You are right though.
