The original plan was to require at least one month of 3G but that policy has been canceled. Now you can simply buy it and just use wifi and later go to a Verizon store to activate 3g if you want.

The Xoom doesn't offer a wifi ONLY version like the iPad... yet... but that doesn't mean you have to use the 3g capability.

That's true, my mistake. That said, I could buy an iPad 1 and an iPad 2 for the cost of one Xoom with no 3G access.

Kind of odd to see apple have the cheaper product. I was really hoping that the "competition" would drive prices down.

Other tablets will be priced lower soon enough. I think Motorola got a bunch of hype at CES and tried to take advantage with a high price. Problem is, their roll-out was disjointed, their marketing sucked, they tried to go early to be "first" over Apple but Honeycomb wasn't ready, and it hasn't worked out well for them. There aren't any apps because the SDK was released the day before the Xoom. Flash isn't ready. People will have to send the machine in the mail for a week to get 4G up and running. Stupid.

exactly. Apple really had a chance to stay ahead of the game with a much improved iPad2... they failed and the barrage of better hardware combined with a mature Honeycomb OS will make a huge difference... but smart money will wait until the 2nd half of 2011... or even longer when the quad core tablets start to roll out with SERIOUS power... if you HAVE to have one sooner, at least wait until May.

The problem with this analysis is you think regular consumers care about hardware specs. They just want it to be easy to use and that it actually works good. That is why Apple will remain the market leaders for tablets for the foreseeable future.

I probably should add that they want the price to be reasonable as well.

And for the record I have never owned a Mac but I do have an ipod and it works wonderfully and is simple to use.
