2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

You mean there is a chance that DM could be wrong? It might be a gamble? If he can't know for sure it will work out we shouldn't do it, he is paid to be right.

Sarcasm.

I'm saying that I wouldn't acquire Haren. I'm fairly confident that DM would make the wrong decision, though.

All stuff that should drive the price for him down.

If you could acquire him at the deadline, you'd have a half season or so to gauge his health, knowing you have a pricy but not ungodly option to pick up if necessary. If it pans out, he pitches well and health concerns are curbed, you can talk extension.

All speculation at this point, anyway. But something I hadn't really considered until today.

I'm of the opinion that, as long as you aren't moving key pieces, take as many chances on high upside guys as you can. I would trade 3 guys like sanchez, haren, etc not working out for one coming through as long as the price isn't too steep.

That seems like an awfully generous time frame, given that Dave Dombrowski took over the Detroit Tigers in 2002, a situation even more hopeless than the one Moore inherited in Kansas City (the 2003 Tigers lost an American League–record 119 games). Three years later, Dombrowski had them in the World Series."

I agree, because the owner opening up his checkbook and paying mucho dinero for the likes of Pudge and Magglio had absolutely NOTHING to do with the turnaround. Uh huh.

Can't say it's unlucky and then give Dayton credit for anything that worked out positively because that was just luck, too.

I understand that Escobar is a good player but I don't see him in any All Star Games yet...Cain is completely unproven who can't stay healthy....Odorizzi from all accounts is NOT an ace, more like a 3rd starter...and Jeffress or whoever sucks.
everything I've heard on odo from the day the trade was made is he has ace potential. in fact you saying it is the first I've heard more like a 3rd starter. and I couldn't care less if Alcides makes an all start game in his career the guy is a stud. highlight reel in defense and has been hitting the ball. he will be the best shortstop in baseball for years soon.

Exact opposite on Odorizzi. I've always heard good No. 2/excellent No. 3 upside from the rankings folks.

Here's a scouting report from Goldstein from the offseason of the trade.

Here's what MLB.com had to say about him to start the year. He's no. 36

Law and JJ Cooper have him slotted the same.

I hope you're right.

But saying that the Royals have "won the trade" is ridiculous.

Would be really nice if he lives up to the best comps and moves quickly...

It's not even close that we got the far superior end of the trade. We got an everyday shortstop who is already one of the best in the league for a pitcher who no longer wanted to be here and did nothing to help the Brewers with their goal of an NL title or WS title. Again, you have to remember that Milwaukee was chasing a title or else they wouldnt have done a trade in which they literally sold thd farm. All the other pieces of the trade are icing on the cake for us. Would you really rather have Greinke instead of Escobar, Cain, and Odo? I sure hope not.
