The older "tastier" rock...

I was digging through old CD's, MP3's, etc. tonight and came across some AWESOME old stuff. Along the lines of Steely Dan's "Aja", Dire Straits "Telegraph Road", ELP's "Tarkus", even Chicago's first album (which ROCKS BTW for it's time). Obviously I like old prog, jazz and classical influences. What old albums/songs from WAY back in the day do you miss? Turn me on to some more good old stuff.

I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money

And I'm down on my luck
Yes I'm down on my luck

UFO (Lights Out and Force It albums).

Styx (the earlier stuff before The Grand Illusion, notably Crystal Ball and Equinox as well as some early singles like "Witch Wolf" and "The Grove of Eglantine" and "Best Thing"). Don't get me wrong, I love that album as well as Cornerstone and Pieces of Eight. But before Dennis DeYoung really influenced his poppiness--thanks to the success of "Babe"--the group was a lot more rockin' because James Young and Tommy Shaw got to express themselves more.

In a more modern vein: the first two Iron Maiden albums with Paul DiAnno (Killers and Iron Maiden). Again, I love the Bruce Dickinson stuff, but those first two albums were more "English garage band" sounding.

Check out Zevon's "Keep me in your Heart"

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for awhile

If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for awhile

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for while

There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile

You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for while

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for while

These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

For something different from the 70's- the weird, crazy-good infusion of jazz, psychedelic, and classic rock all melded together as though Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd had a baby together.

I'm really gonna have to check this out. Never heard of 'em, and I'm not sure why.

The 70's was all about getting some air time on the radios. If your band didn't produce a hit tune, your band didn't get any air time with the rock stations.

Not to mention, nobody was really sure where to place a band like Can in the music genres back then.

Can is very cool. Like some of Zappa's earlier works, it's different, it's out there, and it will take a few listening tos' to absorb everything that is going on.

There are LOTS of bands that never had radio hits. Hell, other than on Dr. Demento, Zappa never REALLY had any "hits".

And they didn't have very many album sales then either. I was just saying there's a reason for Can not being widely known.

However, Can's Tago Mago and Future Days and their Ege albums have all garnered critical acclaim over the years.

I'm skimming the threads on the front page and I see "The older 'tastier' cock".

I'm juvenile enough that I needed to post it too.
