Sporting Kansas City extends contract for manager and technical director Peter Vermes

Sporting Kansas City announced today the extension of Peter Vermes’ contract as manager and technical director of the club through the 2017 MLS season.

http://www.sportingkc.com/news/2013/...r-peter-vermes

“What's been important for us is continuity on and off the field and this decision allows us to keep that continuity in place for the foreseeable future,” Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman said. “We love that Peter has always been a long-term thinker and I believe the building blocks around turning this into a great organization long-term are in place. Having another four years to advance this cause is going to be very valuable to the team. We love that Peter has the commitment that he has to this city, this organization and to the development of the players.”

“We have an incredible ownership group. Their vision and follow-thru on all the initiatives they bring to this organization is incredible,” Vermes said. “Their passion for what this club is and for making it happen is the reason we sit here today as one of the best organizations in Major League Soccer. I'm excited to be a part of it and to continue helping to grow this organization. It's a proud moment for me.”

Vermes has overseen all soccer operations for the club since being named technical director in November 2006 and is the longest tenured technical director in MLS. In 2009, Vermes became the team’s manager and his .557 winning percentage over five seasons is the best in team history and sixth best all-time among MLS coaches with a minimum of one full season on the sidelines.

He has led Sporting Kansas City to first place finishes in the Eastern Conference each of the past two years and currently has the club in contention for the Supporters’ Shield with a four-point lead atop the East in 2013. Under Vermes direction, Sporting Kansas City claimed the team’s first trophy in eight years with the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship and qualified to represent Major League Soccer in the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League.

An MLS Coach of the Year finalist in 2011 and 2012, Vermes was selected to lead the MLS Generation adidas tour in 2011 to the Netherlands and will serve as the head coach for the MLS All-Stars against Italy’s AS Roma during the 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Sporting Park on July 31.

Vermes’ distinguished playing career included 67 appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team as he represented the United States at the 1988 Olympics and 1990 FIFA World Cup. He became the first American to play in the first divisions of Hungary and Holland, while also spending four seasons in the Spanish second division before returning for Major League Soccer’s inaugural season in 1996. In seven MLS seasons, he started 208 of his 209 appearances in MLS competition (including playoffs) with 11 goals and 19 assists, and reached the postseason in all seven campaigns.

Vermes arrived in Kansas City ahead of the historic 2000 season, helping lead the club to the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup double and earning MLS All-Star, Best XI and Defender of the Year honors. He retired following the 2002 season, his third in Kansas City, and was elected into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on the Veteran ballot earlier

If they got rid of offsides, the game would be pretty crazy and would be all over the place. It'd be ****ing hilarious though.

As for the actual news. I can't be bothered reading through all 100+ posts, Zach, what's you opinion on the extension?
The American stereotype that soccer isn't that popular here? So what, it's not. I didn't know we were supposed to be ashamed of that on the world stage.

CP is what the term 'Murica was made for. American stereotypes are only reinforced here.

You seem to have a habit of bitching and moaning about things that could easily be solved by just not participating in a thread.

The term "'Murica" was mostly made so people that aren't funny could use an overused joke and pretend they're funny.

And you seem to have a habit about bitching and moaning about my bitching and moaning. Perhaps you could take your own advice. Or go **** yourself. I care about your opinion only slightly more than Saul's.

I already have the main Kansas Sporting thread on ignore. If little miss Zackipoo had posted his soccer bullshit in there, I would have never even seen it.

See how that works?

My point is that you probably complain more than any other member on this site. Practically every post you make is combative in one way or another. You seem to get off on it somehow.

I only complain because you've made such a big deal out of other members that you don't like, when the reality is that you drag down more threads than just about anyone.

In short, I think you need a hobby. There's more to life than being an ass.

Slapping trolls around is my hobby. So is making you cry.

I get along fine with people who are worth getting along with. If you're not one of them, chances are I really don't have a problem with it.

I think it is funny you feel like a rule that isn't at all needed would be part of a game played by so many for so long. Like...it hasn't been thought through.

Oh wait no offsides? Yea. Nobody ever considered it.
What makes you think I don't think it was ever thought about? I gave my opinion on what I think would make it better just like some people are of the opinion that increased instantly replay in MLB would be better. I notice you didn't say anything about the ties though. Do you like the ties without a shootout?

Let me clarify - I think you need a hobby that doesn't involve sitting on your computer alone for hours on end. It makes you bitter.

It might be more exciting in some ways, but a ton of the strategy would be lost.
I don't think strategy would be lost it would just be changed. If a player wants to leave the defensive postition early and weaken his team's defense let him, the other team should figure out how to take advantage.

Also, they could have a sort of line of scrimmage to prevent guys from just camping next to the goal. Like a line 3/4 up the field or the midline or something similar that you can't cross until your team takes possession. I realize it won't change but I just think the game could be more exciting.
