Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

Yes, and people are not putting enough emphasis on this defense. We have got to improve at Safety and CB, or we will be asking Alex Smith to win shoot-outs.

Oakland first game 26-16 - Quinn 1 INT 16.7 QB rating, Cassel 1 INT, 1 Fumble lost.
Pittsburgh - Cassel 11 for 26, 1 INT in OT, no touchdowns
Denver first game - 17-9 loss, Quinn 50 QB rating, 1 INT
Baltimore - 9-6 loss, Cassel 4 turnovers, fumble on the goal line.

The defense played well in all those games but couldn't overcome the shitty QB play.

They absolutely will fill those spots this offseason. I've been told Sean Smith is the target and they will move on him quickly.

I think the defense we play next year will really make this a much better unit.

The defense last year was hung out to dry a lot. It got roasted because the schemes at times didn't match the talent we have and how aggressive they can play.

Any words from your source on the offensive line?

Yeah the 3-4 1 gap defense that we will be running this year will be much more aggressive. Combine that with Al Harris' bump coverage. We should be solid.

I've never not been - I've said for some time that Alex Smith would be a good acquisition.

However, giving up a 2nd is too much and Smith isn't good enough to justify passing on something potentially better in Geno.

I'm able to compartmentalize the player from what it means. Alex Smith doesn't suck and we'll be a solid team with him under center. I'd certainly like to be significantly better than solid and I hope Reid agrees with me.

Just that they let Winston go because they don't feel that Jeff Allen is suited for LG and they think he could hang at RT.

They'll bring someone in for the line, but didn't get a name of who they were targeting.

Another factor with Winston is he's a big mouth in the NFLPA and did rub people the wrong way in the organization.

Thanks.

Hopefully they go after someone like Andy Levitre or Donald Thomas to fill in that LG spot.

Still need to generate more consistent pressure. But thats probably a product of Romeo's philosophy.

Based on this, I think we can safely say the Chiefs won't take an OT at #1. They might trade down, but they won't go OT. The math doesn't add up if they're planning on using Allen at RT along with somebody in free agency to fill the vacancy. It leaves a hole at LG, but I think we can/should safely say they won't use a 1st round pick to fill that spot.

Heh, I brought up the Allen move in the Winston thread, but nobody was a fan. I think he will be better there then Stephenson.

They were blowouts because of the turnovers, and TBG said if we had one that didn't turn the ball over.

Jeff Allen:

Quote:
Positives:

Natural bender with outstanding recovery quickness, lateral agility and balance to mirror and sustain — is seldom on the ground or beaten in pass protection. Plays with a very solid base. Throws his hips in the hole and wins with quickness at the snap. Controls defenders with his hands. Is athletic running the field and can connect on the second level. Good football intelligence. Quick learner. Flipped sides and has proven he can play in a left- or right-hand stance. Versatility is a big plus — can play either tackle position and has the quickness to handle movement on the inside. Solid character. Very committed, dedicated approach — has not missed a practice or game. Is a tough, durable, hardworking four-year starter.
Negatives:

Does not look the part — is knock-kneed, fleshy-bodied and pear-shaped. Lacks ideal height and arm length for the outside. Not a nasty finisher or fiery run blocker. Not strong-handed or violent with his punch. Tends to set tall and catches a lot. Undisciplined eyes — late to see and adjust to some stunts. Conditioning has been a concern, and diet might require some additional monitoring.
Summary:

A model of consistency on and off the field, Allen makes the game look easy and is one of the best pure pass protectors in this year’s draft, with unique balance, coordination and agility to warrant late-first-round consideration as a left tackle prospect. Versatility, football smarts and durability could allow him to start immediately and play at a high level for the next 10 years.

The defense played well in all those games but couldn't overcome the shitty QB play.
I'll take your word for it since I don't remember watching a single KC game.

But the highlighted part is the Story of Smith's career. We've had a great D for years, stifled by shitty QB play.

It finally took Harbaugh to make him mediocre and we started winning.
