Mock (1/17)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs extend Alex Smith 4 years, $60m ($36m guaranteed), and OLB Justin Houston 6 years, $62m ($32m guaranteed).

2. The Chiefs restructure SS Eric Berry and OLB Tamba Hali.

3. The Chiefs resign WR Dexter McCluster to a 4 year, $19m deal, OG Geoff Schwartz to a 2 year, $7m deal and S Husain Abdullah to a 2 year, $4m deal.

3. The Chiefs resign NT Jerrell Powe, ILB Akeem Jordan, and LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

4. The Chiefs let walk: OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, DE Tyson Jackson, OLB Frank Zombo, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quinten Demps

5. The Chiefs cut: CB Dunta Robinson

6. Chiefs sign WR Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) to a 3 year, $15m deal, OT Winston Justice (Broncos) to a 1-year, $2m deal, DE Antonio Smith (Texans) to a 2 year, $9m deal.

On with the show:

1.23. TE Jace Amaro, Texas Tech

Any familiar with the Red Raider knows what makes Amaro so special. He's a great athlete, he's big and he's fast. But Amaro's special sauce is his route running. He is an unheard-of route runner at the TE position. He doesn't rely on pure athleticism like Jimmy Graham, or unbelievable hands like Rob Gronkowski. He's more like a Tony Gonzalez, in that he run a sharp route, gain separation and find soft spots in any defense.

3.87. OLB Michael Sam, Missouri

Martin is not a prototypical edge rusher, but if he's going to make any noise in the NFL, this is going to have to be where it is: in a system that is not going to ask him to produce right away, and use his extraordinary burst off the edge in passing situations.

This, admittedly, is an unorthodox pick for John Dorsey. He prefers better athletes that you can later mold into football players, and I almost picked Kareem Martin here, but I'll go with Sam because I love his effort on the field, and I think he'll give the Chiefs their most immediate help at backup OLB since Justin Houston backed up Andy Studebaker in 2011.

4.119. S Tevin McDonald, Eastern Washington

Google didn't tell me if McDonald was declaring this year, but it'd make a ton of sense for Dorsey/Reid to go with him if he does. He's a very talented ballhawk who was so critical to UCLA's defense, his ejection from the team collapsed their secondary. He's played well for EWU, and while he is a problem child, the Chiefs can afford adding one this offseason. McDonald's brother players in the NFL, and his father played as well. Dorsey/Reid love bloodlines.

5.151. CB Keith McGill, Utah

McGill is a physical freak at corner, standing a tall 6'3" with a really fluid backpedal/hipturn. McGill's more of a work in progress than he is a Day One contributor, but the Chiefs already potentially have their top 4 CBs locked in with Flowers, Smith, Cooper, and Parker. McGill can take some time to develop if need be.

6.177. NT Justin Ellis, Louisiana Tech

Ellis just clocked in at the East/West Game at 6'1", 350 lbs. The Chiefs need more help for Poe at NT, as playing every snap evidently wore him down. I love me some Jerrell Powe, and hopefully he will have an elevated role. But I expect the Chiefs to add some NT talent this offseason even if they do.

6.183. S Antone Exum, Virginia Tech

Exum is a really promising talent that's missed a couple years with ACL and ankle issues, dropping him three full rounds where his talent would otherwise suggests he belongs. In Kansas City, with our depleted S corps, we can afford to take a risk on this player late in the 6th and give him time to heal properly, a la Sanders Commings in 2013.

7.215. RB Roderick McDowell, Clemson

I would roll the dice on McDowell, even if he is a one-year wonder. All the Clemson RBs come out of that program as primo NFL runners, and McDowell looked really good this year as a Cyrus Gray-sized runner.

I do as well. I think there's really only going to be two options this offseason. Give McCluster a new deal and draft a WR or....sign a FA WR and draft a WR.

3. The Chiefs resign WR Dexter McCluster to a 4 year, $19m deal, OG Geoff Schwartz to a 2 year, $7m deal and S Husain Abdullah to a 2 year, $4m deal. [B]Would rather we let Dex go for that kind of money and draft his replacement or sign the CFL dude (Dex clone)

3. The Chiefs resign NT Jerrell Powe, ILB Akeem Jordan, and LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals. Yes

4. The Chiefs let walk: OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, DE Tyson Jackson, OLB Frank Zombo, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quinten Demps Yes

5. The Chiefs cut: CB Dunta Robinson Hell yes

6. Chiefs sign WR Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) to a 3 year, $15m deal, OT Winston Justice (Broncos) to a 1-year, $2m deal, DE Antonio Smith (Texans) to a 2 year, $9m deal. None of the above, rather just sign Byrd

On with the show:

1.23. TE Jace Amaro, Texas Tech wanted but now see Kony Early (DE)

3.87. OLB Michael Sam, Missouri like but I'd go Ryan Groy (OG/OT)
Martin is not a prototypical edge rusher, but if he's going to make any noise in the NFL, this is going to have to be where it is: in a system that is not going to ask him to produce right away, and use his extraordinary burst off the edge in passing situations.

4.119. S Tevin McDonald, Eastern Washington I like but since I have Bryd in FA, Marcus Williams (cb)
Google didn't tell me if McDonald was declaring this year, but it'd make a ton of sense for Dorsey/Reid to go with him if he does. He's a very talented ballhawk who was so critical to UCLA's defense, his ejection from the team collapsed their secondary. Dorsey/Reid love bloodlines.

5.151. CB Keith McGill, Utah Also like but I'd go Ronald Powell (olb)

6.177. NT Justin Ellis, Louisiana Tech Nice but I'd like Jeff Janis (wr)

6.183. S Antone Exum, Virginia Tech would love him here

In Kansas City, with our depleted S corps, we can afford to take a risk on this player late in the 6th and give him time to heal properly, a la Sanders Commings in 2013.

7.215. RB Roderick McDowell, Clemson good choice here
I would roll the dice on McDowell, even if he is a one-year wonder. All the Clemson RBs come out of that program as primo NFL runners, and McDowell looked really good this year as a Cyrus Gray-sized runner.
Like your whole concept for the offseason, especially with existing players and FA's. Just a minor change here or there which then necessitates changes to the draft imo.

Honestly I think you'll see DMC or Avery gone and 2 new WR's added. 1 through FA and 1 through the draft.
