The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

It'll be a 4th or a 4th plus a 2013 conditional

Because Geno isn't going to come in here day 1 and play well under an Andy Reid designed WCO without any NFL experience.

Always need "that guy" who can come in and do well enough to win a few games. Maybe even help your rookie through TC OTA and preseason.

I think if the Alex Smith-to-Kansas City rumors are true, the most heartbroken person of all won't be Matt Cassel, who knows he's not in the mix to start with the Chiefs. It'll be Matt Barkley. Andy Reid would have loved working with Barkley, and I believe Barkley would have fit superbly in K.C.

Who knows? He still might, but if the Chiefs get Smith, they should just let Brandon Albert walk (he's not worth $10 million a year), take Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel No. 1 overall, and if Barkley's there at the top of the second round, consider taking the USC passer there. But he wouldn't be essential then.

I think nothing much changed with the quarterbacks Sunday, the day they worked out, except that Florida State's E.J. Manuel threw the ball very well and raised his stock some. After watching the festivities, NFL Net's Mike Mayock said he thought it was still Geno Smith and Matt Barkley in the first round, with a chance that a third thrower could sneak in.

"The over-under is two on the quarterbacks in the first round,'' Mayock said a couple of hours before the Alex Smith-to-K.C. reports began. "Smith will be there somewhere. We're all off Barkley right now because he kind of disappeared this week, but when it's all said and done, people go back and watch his junior tape and put him up on the board and see what kind of football mind he has, he'll end up somewhere in the first round. If history tells us anything lately, it's that somebody else is going to rise.

"There are at least three teams in the top 10 that we all know about that need a quarterback desperately with Kansas City, Arizona and Buffalo. So yes, there will be some activity between 20 and 32, and some of those teams trying to get back up into the first round. I don't know who the third guy is ... Some teams are going to like [Mike] Glennon because of the big arm. Tyler Wilson, if you watch the junior tape, it's good. Landry Jones, if you watch the junior tape, it's good. Last year I knew it was going to be [Ryan] Tannehill; I told people he was going to be a top-10 pick right around this time last year because I could see he was going to be a riser. This year, I'm not sure who it is. There is just too much inconsistent tape amongst the top guys. Ryan Nassib is another guy who coaches are going to like a lot; he reminds me a little bit of Andy Dalton and Kirk Cousins with the way he approaches the game." My money's on Nassib.

A majority of you guys are out there seriously undervaluing the Chiefs leverage at this point. Stay calm and watch this unfold in March, you'll be surprised how well we clean this up.
We heard this many times by people throughout the Pioli era. That cleaned up nicely...
This franchise is going to have to SHOW me something different, not the same ol shit.

I don't hate the idea of adding Alex Smith as a veteran presence and perhaps temp starter while a young guy develops but I'd hate it if we give up anything of real worth for him.

If the deal is truly done already then San Fran got what they wanted. That's disconcerting for a guy who might have been cut in the end.

They aren't going to spend the #1 overall pick on the "future". Teams HAVE to get contribution from the #1 overall pick on DAY ONE.

Geno and Barkley will be gone in the top 10. We're not trading down and they won't be there for us to trade up.

This isn't Madden. Alex Smith is going to be THE guy.

With the caveat that everyone fibs at this time of the year: I'm told the #49ers do not have a trade deal in place for Alex Smith.

You know, if Andy Reid "would have loved" to work with Matt Barkley so much, I think Andy Reid could do something about that. Just a thought.
