Real Talk: The Defense

So I was having a conversation with a fellow Chiefs fan the other day that has had the opportunity to watch some game film from since the San Diego game. I just wanted to get some good football opinion on what he said because it makes sense to me.

Basically Earlier in the season we were screaming that our offense was vanilla and we weren't doing many "dynamic" things. In week 11 and 12 we saw a different offense, more dynamic plays and Alex throwing down the field. There were some theories that the reason the offense was so vanilla was that we weren't trying to give up the whole playbook right away.

Starting in week 12 we saw a huge departure of the defense we had come to love in the first 11 weeks. Granted some of the departure could have been due to injuries (Hali/Houston) but what interests me the most is that my friend has said that we are not blitzing or stunting as much as we were earlier in the season. I'm wondering if we are going "vanilla" on defense so that there will be less game film on what we will really do come playoff time? I know conspiracy theory, but I think it makes sense, as long as we know we can do what we did in the Raiders game and not have another San Diego game.

I didn't get a chance to watch the game yesterday, I get it Lewis is a terrible safety I have been saying that all year too, however I think that the lack of blitzing and stunting has left our secondary even more exposed than normal.

So what do the CP experts think?

Starting in Week 12?

Try week 7. That's where the slide started, and it gained momentum when Houston was injured.

we only gave up 17 and 13 points in those games? I know our defense was getting burned for big plays but I think that is the risk you take when you blitz - what bothers me is that the big plays are more consistent and we are giving up points - where before the big plays were few and far between and we still shut offenses out of the endzone

We gave up a ton of yardage to 4th string QB's. A good QB would have resulted in more points, wouldn't you think?

So what happened with RGIII? We managed to hold him in check and he is certainly better than the 4th string QB's you describe

A combination of injury and reeruned offensive coordinator. Plus the snow.

So now you're leaning on the ONE GAME the defense has played well since Week 7?

Actually, I apologize. It was Week 8 when the slide started, and it coincided with not getting to the QB. 2 sacks in 5 games starting in Week 8. BEFORE Houston was injured.

You made a dumb comment that the defense took an ugly turn after Week 11, and it was well before that. Now you're reaching.

The logical explanation is that because there is more game film out there, our DB's have been exposed. Even Cooper admitted that teams are exposing his technique. Our two outside corners have poor ball skills and our deep safety, whether that be Demps or Lewis, is rarely in a position to make a play on the ball. The new strat to beat the Chiefs is to simply throw it up and watch their WR's either run under it or outplay our DB's on the ball.

Knowing that, it's easy to see why our DC is reluctant to blitz and leave those guys on an island.

Imo, THAT is why our D is struggling.

And our lack of depth is causing problems. They are simply wearing the **** out of Poe with the number of snaps that he's playing.

QB's simply don't have any respect for Cooper. Week after week QB's are simply throwing over the top on him. And week after week he's proving that he can't make a play on the ball in the air.

Every DB that Dorsey has brought in has been junk so far. We were better off with Arenas at Nickel and Flowers on the outside. At least QB's respect Flowers enough to not just "chuck it up" and hope for the best.

I would agree with that but I just can't believe that Dorsey would drop Powe in favor of Hall if they had any inclination that Poe was wearing out
