PS3 Newbie Question

I'm a house parent at a children's home and ATT gave us a PS3 along with some games for Christmas. I haven't played a game since the early 90s so I don't know much about gaming. Right now we have an 11 year old boy, a 5 year old boy, and a 6 year old girl with downs.

The games we were given are:
  • LittleBigPlanet 3
  • MLB 14 The Show
  • Lego Star Wars Complete Saga
  • Sonic Generations
  • Lego Batman Beyond Gotham & Sly Cooper (came w/ system)
We went to Gamestop and I looked for multiplayer kids games and bought these:
  • Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7
  • Cars 2
  • Toy Story 3
  • ModNation Racers
  • Ratchet & Clank:All 4 One
  • Rayman Origins
  • Wipeout 2
  • Pac Man & the Ghostly Adventures

And the 11 year old bought Minecraft and the 5 year old bought a Sonic racing game.

The guy at Gamestop said we should buy the Last of Us so I went ahead and got it and Call of Duty Black Ops for me.

So anyway - my questions are as follows -

What games should I get for the kids?

Are there any games that would be good for the 6 year old with downs? She functions about like a 3 year old. She is happy for the most part just messing with her controller while the other 2 play, but I would love to find a game she could understand.

I was browsing the web looking for popular games and saw things like Uncharted 3, Portal 2, and Mass Effect 2 - do I need to buy the earlier versions of games like these or can I just pick up where these start?

Should we buy the PS Plus?

Thanks

I dont have answers to all your questions, but here goes...

Last of Us, while amazing, may be a bit much (even for the 11 year old).....it will depend upon his taste in games. It typically takes a bit more patience than most 11 year olds will have. But if they have it, they will love it - and a great sample of what the PS3 can do graphically, etc.

Kids (and adults for that matter) love the Lego games, so you cant go wrong there.

Younger kids seem to really like Sonic (both boys and girls).....combo of the graphics and sounds I think - and fast gameplay.

As for learning games, or smaller child games, Im sorry I dont have that knowledge.

I havent bought PS Plus yet, but will this week so I can get online gaming for PS4.

From my research, it looks like it has some decent perks to it (free games/discounted games).

By the way, my 8 year old nephew loves the Lego Marvel super heroes.

Most of those games are perfect for kids. IMHO The Last of Us, (while it's probably the best PS3 game ever made) isn't appropriate for kids. Neither is COD really but that's at your discretion.
Minecraft is a great game for little ones. You've done a pretty good job selecting games. If you want a great game to entertain yourself, (and you're a fan) get the South Park game. It's great.

I wasn't planning on letting the kids play Last of Us or Call of Duty - I bought those because once I started messing around with the kids games I realized how much fun playing games was.

I'd like to get into Uncharted and some other games, but I'm not sure if I need to start with the first game or just buy the newest ones.

My almost 3 year old has been playing minecraft on the ps3 for a year. She didn't always know exactly what ingredients were needed to make specific things, but she chases zombies and puppies and explores for as many hours as I let her.

Uncharted... I am probably the biggest fanboy of this series on here. I'll admit that the first one is a little outdated but I highly recommend you play them all. The more you play, the better it gets. Also, I don't give a shit what others say... I still think the third one was just as good as 2. It just had an anticlimactic ending compared to 2.
