Defense narrative is wrong on this game

Chiefs lost because on 10 offensive possessions they scored 13 points. They had plenty of possessions. When you can't convert 1st downs your TOP suffers. It's simply wrong that Indys rush game was why they won. Chiefs gave up 4 ypc, league average, and only 330 total.

Lots of running requires long drives with many opportunities to be stopped, which the chiefs did every drive except the first. Unless you convert those to TDs you aren't scoring enough to win in the modern NFL without a great defense. 19 points won't get it done.

Even in the AFCCG the chiefs only yielded 3.7 ypc. But they couldn't stop the short pass game and gave up 7 TDs. This year's team is getting stops at key times the last two weeks. This week they eliminated big plays except the PI.

The defense has not been good. But it's been good enough to be 5-0, and is getting better. Online is trash, and is not helped by Andy never running the ball or enough screens/draws to keep the opposing D line honest. We get Mo next week and hopefully a trade or two to add a DB and possibly front 7 piece. Chiefs are gonna getcha, yarhoooo.

We lost the game because the Colts controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

We couldn't stop the run. We couldn't run or pass block.

Injuries certainly played a part in that.

"Herpaderp, defense held up their end, derpDERP the offense sucked, blergDERG..."

If the run defense hadn't have sucked so bad, Indy wouldve been forced to throw to stay in the game. And that would favor Mahomes.

uhh...that's what I was saying.

Although I don't think it would've favored Mahomes in that game, because we couldn't pass block for shit. Or run block for that matter.

Time of possession doesn’t matter as much as the pessimists of the defense would have you believe. That defense tonight wins every game in 2018.

We will return to what we were on offense in 2018 as soon as we get healthy and this defense is good enough, stop with the overreactions.

We asked for improvement from absolutely terrible to just average to go with our historically great offense, we got it. Offense didn’t hold their end tonight which is likely cause they’re beat to sh1t with injuries.

It’s all about winning the SB in Feb and this defense is good enough, just get the offense to return to form.
Define average. I do not think this word means what you think it means.

Yup.

The problem wasn't Alex Smith.

The problem wasn't Bob Sutton.

Well, the problem is that there's a glaring weakness. The inability to stop the run.

I would argue that it may well be that this defense is better than last year's because they appear to cover better; although they have less pass rush so far so that's probably a wash.

But in the NFL if you have a glaring weakness you're in trouble. If it's run defense, you're really in trouble when you play teams with strong running games.

The Colts played 1950's football; Shottenheimer's wet dream. And they flat kicked the crap out of us at the line of scrimmage.

If we're healthy I think we eke out a win last night, but balanced teams like New England are going to be a real problem come January.

As it pertains to last night specifically, there is plenty of blame to go around.

The defense was pretty good against the pass, but atrocious against the run.

The offense has to be able to score more than 13 at home against an injured defense that isn’t even great when healthy.

Reid has to not be a complete ****ing moron with the game on the line. You have to put the ball in the MVPs hands on 4th and 1. You have to ****ing roll with Mahomes in that situation.

The Colts offensive and defensive success were dependent on each other. Had our offensive line not been dominated, the Colts game plan of eating clock wouldn't have worked. And the flip side is also true -- had our run D been better, and given our offense more possessions...

What's worrisome to me is that only Mahomes magic allowed us to move the ball. The offensive line was dominated to an extent that you don't see very often.

Allowing 19 points is actually above average for a defense when looking at what most defenses give up per game so there’s that.

We go one game without the O showing up for the first time in 2 years and this entire board is in meltdown mode.

19 points allowed wins us every game last year. Our offense will get back to what they were last year when healthy.

They were only able to do this because the offense disappeared after it was 10-10. When we are healthy on O, teams are not going to be able to run the ball every play and kick FGs on O, or it will be 28-12 before they can even blink.

We don’t need to be the Bears or Pats on defense, we need a defense that supports our incredibly good offense in allowing them to win 100% of the games where they score 28+. We have that with this defense.
