possible virus?
I usually use Firefox but it doesn't do the trick on a couple of java based websites like ircspy.com or mydownloader.com.
Anyhow, I was looking for something on one of those sites and something installed on my machine. I can't find it anywhere and have updated and ran Mcafee Virus definitions as well as, Hi-Jack This, Spybot S&D, CWShredder, Ad-Aware and now running SpySweeper (hopefully I fixed it with Spy Sweeper). Hijack this nothing was out of the ordinary in the registry. The others found traces of things but nothing that's stopping my issue. Issue: Every hour or so there's one Internet Explorer window on my taskbar. When I click on it it seems like it "virtually" comes/expands from systray but it doesn't expand onto the screen. What's even more weird is that, each window (When it happens) is loaded with a different search engine everytime and that's it. Teoma, google, altavista, gigablst, lycos, etc. Also there aren't multiple windows... just one (no matter how long I'm away from the computer). I've searched google to the point I've reached the end of the internet. I'm pretty computer savvy and just can't find anything to get rid of it (assuming Spy Sweeper didn't do the trick). I've searched throughout the registry to no avail and delated some search keys from various places and even that didn't fix the issue. Anyhow, does anyone have an idea or have ran across this before? Any help would really be appreciated. ~ I HATE SPYWARE Last edited by wutamess; 01-16-2005 at 11:01 PM.. |

Whutamess, i don't know about that particular virus. Thats a wild one. I will tell you an experience i had with mine about 3 months ago. My computer would go slower and slower. I had Norton on it. All updated. I ran virus checks, defrags, spyware every day to try to get rid of it to no avail.
Finally i took it to a reputable comp place to have them fix it, because surfin the net was next to impossible by then. A couple days later i had it back good as new. They installed free software called AVG anit-virus. Which i and others on this board highly recommend. |

I would be sure and do a system restore if you havent already. 50/50 chance it will fix it. Be sure and go back far enough to do the trick.

That's cheating. I wanna know what files or software is causing it to do this. This one is a tricky one. I'm usually able to find the culprit with hijackthis but this one went "deep deep undercover". It must be a federally. ~Bluestreak reference. |

Before I finished reading your post I was thinking... "Shit naw I'm not taking this to anyone". "I'd reinstall XP before I do that". But after finishing it I see you were recommending the software. Is it freeware? nm I'll search for it thanks a mill. Rep your way. |

Just downloaded it.
I'm gonna wait to see if the SpySweeper sweep did anything to fix it. If not, I'll install it and run it to see if it does the trick. Thanks again. |

It was one of the 2 sites listed in the Topic header. I only use Internet Explorer for those 2 sites only because the way Firefox can't handle the java. Other than that it's all Firefox. |
