It's basically a tie between Phantom and Les Mis. For movies maybe Singing in the Rain, though there are a bunch I like.

The music is just one amazing component of the film, for me. I hesitate even calling it a "musical" as the music itself doesn't move the plot forward, nor does it provide any information into the inner workings of our characters. At least not in the way a "typical musical" will... but I put it in this catagory because most people do. I thought the relationship between the two leads was breath-taking and so beautiful. The music just enhanced an already perfect love story. It's definately a subtle film and not for everyone. It just hit me in a very unique way.

I also wanted to also mention ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and I'M NOT THERE as pretty amazing movie musicals. I really loved those films.

Oh, wait, I suppose "Sleepless in Seattle' is a gay movie so the reference is probably lost.

I know what he's saying though. In most musicals you could cut all the normal dialogue, listen to the songs, and still know what the plot was and the resolution, and capture the dramatic effect. You couldn't really do that if you just listened to the songs from "once" though.
