What the hell is this chant everybody sings at games now?

For those that are musically literate, it goes E....G E D C.... B..... where the dots are long notes. I don't know how else to ****ing describe it. I don't know what it's called. I don't know what it's from. I don't know why the **** fans think it's good. And I don't know how to search for it to show you.

I noticed it at a college football game on TV maybe two or three years ago? I just assumed it was something stupid that Florida fans did, but now I've seen it in all manners of college sports. And as of this year I've seen it at NFL and NBA games.

It's dumb, it's annoying, and it has to stop. If the goal is to get the crowd into it so they make some noise, there are better ways to do that than a dumbass chant. If I were a visiting player on that home court/field and the fans started doing that, I'd laugh at them, call them dumbasses, and play even better and more motivated than I was to make them look like assholes.

Edit: Apparently my sources tell me this is what it is:

Group chants are just another example of the erosion of individual liberties. Sad.

Surprised that someone who could pick out the notes to Seven Nation Army hasn't heard of Jack White or the White Stripes.

Don't make me go on a rant about philistines and the degradation of beauty that most music since the 1950s has breached into American society. Because I will.

Here's something else: I can pick out the notes to the music but I can't play guitar.

Fitting, this is on Deadspin today. The entire history of how the song became a sports anthem. Oddly enough, it claims the first American team to pick the idea up from soccer was Penn State.

The writer of that article calls it "haunting" like, four different times.

It's simplistic drivel, and it infects its fans with its simplistic driveliness every time the subject is brought up or sung. This article is prime evidence.

Yes because tens of thousands of fans should get wrapped up on really really complicated music in the middle of ban football game in unison.

The point is it has no message.

I don't have a problem with fans doing group cheers. "J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS." "That's a Kansas City Chiefs FIRST DOWN." "DE-FENSE *bum bum*" They all cheer on the team.

WTF does singing that riff from Seven Nation Army do?
