INSANITY Workout – any CP Insanity veterans in here??

So my daughter says to me the other day…. “Hey Dad, you said you were going to get back to working again right? Let’s buy Insanity and do it together.” So I said (having no friggin idea what Insanity IS)…. “Sure. Sounds great.”
Well now I’m doing some research on it and I’m actually a little sick to my stomach. She’s a 6 foot solid muscled 18 year old (that somehow thinks she’s out of shape….women!) and I’m a 6 foot 250 lb 46 year old for Gods sake! I mean….I’m not a blob or anything. I’m pretty active....OK fairly active. I can still bust some moves on a basketball court…..I just gotta play the half court game now you know? I hit the treadmill from time to time. But for crying out loud what I’m reading about this workout is scaring the crap outta me! I’m really not sure I’ll be able to do this. Anyone went through this thing? This frigging workout is gonna show up in the mail any day now and……gulp…..I’m a-scairt!

Not to mention you will likely wear out your carpet.

I have a workout room in my house. Threw down 3 of those rubber mats used in horse trailers. Work like a charm, although they did stink up the room the first couple of months I had them.

Yep.

Gonna revise my shoes and mat recommendation. Mats, preferably really thick, are still a must. Lots of shifting, sliding, and jumping.

As for shoes, if you don't have really good cross-trainers, you are probably better off wearing socks on the mat until you get some. My shoes apparently were not appropriate, and after 5 days they were starting to hurt the instep of both feet from stopping myself on a slide or side-jump.

Oh yeah, and pure cardio was nuts. (Shaun T: "I'm a little worried about this workout" me: "uh-oh")

I'm not going to say that no one could go through it without stopping for an unscheduled break, but you'd probably have to be an athlete to do so.

Day 3. This is BULLSHIT! Damn you Shawn T! YOU can't even do this crap without taking an unscheduled breather every once in a while. I can hardly get outta my chair at work I'm so sore. In high school I was a decent 400 yard guy. When I'd cross the finish line at the end of a 400....it felt like death. Worst feeling in the world....until Insanity. I'm not gonna quit....I'm not gonna quit....I'm probably not gonna quit....

I have a question. I opened up the box late Monday night and realized then that in order to have Sunday as my rest day I should have started on Monday.... so I started on Tuesday, which makes my rest day Monday. I don't want that. I want it to be Sunday. so I either need to workout Sunday and not have a rest day for the first two weeks OR do two workouts in one day. I'm really wondering what would be best. I'm guessing that rest day is pretty important for your body to recover, but two workouts in one day just may kill me! I refuse to skip a workout to catch up. If I'm gonna say I did this...then I'm gonna do it right, every workout. I'm betting that one of these two choices is better than the other, but I don't have the fitness knowledge to know which is best. anyone?

I wouldn't worry about doubling up or even skipping a workout to get on a schedule that will work for you. Getting the workouts to fit your schedule is much more important in the grand scheme. I've done P90X and some other Men's Health routines, but I've never done insanity. Can you post the routines or a link to the routines? Some of us may be able to help you with a creative way to switch up your schedule, but, after week 3, you won't even remember that you missed a workout.

As far as being able to say you did it once you're done.... Hopefully you'll be saying that you're still doing it. Or maybe you did it & now you're doing some new program or something you've designed yourself. Once you start seeing results in the mirror & felling better, you'll start to crave more. Just keep it fun. The idea is to make exercise a part of your regular routine. If I miss the gym a couple of days in a row, my wife takes the kids & makes me go. She says I get "fussy" if I don't work out.

Also, keep posting in here or in the fitness thread about it. It'll help keep you motivated & focused. It's also fun to read about. Good luck!

Yeah, one of the problems I had was that I was too hung up on the schedule... figuring out the rest day, trying not to ever skip a day, then taking off a couple of days just so it lined up better with my schedule that week.

I know the short and specific time frames are all about marketing, and you're supposed to take progress pictures, which I think adds pressure of wanting to do it everyday... but, the focus should be on making it a habit to do the workouts at least a few times a week (if not 6-7), so you continue to workout after you get through the program. It's easy to burn out on those types of workouts when you're doing them 6-7 days/week with the mentality that you can't ever break from the schedule.

OK thanks for the input guys. "keep it fun" yeah I'm not exactly having fun yet. in my past endeavors after I get a groove going I do actually crave the exercise and want to do it. I'm not there yet. with this thing maybe I won't ever actually look forward to it, but I'm gonna try and finish the dang thing.
I'll tell you one thing....I'm walking around just pumped up. my arms are still pumped from this mornings workout. after just three days I actually feel tighter. I'm wearing a pair of jeans today that have never required a belt before......and I shit you not, I'm wishing I had a belt. this is gonna get interesting.

When I did P90X the first time, I went about 60 days w/o losing much weight at all. Then, I had to go buy all new pants because I dropped about 15 lbs over 2 weeks. By the time I finished, I had to have those new pants tailored because they were bunching up.

yeah but I'm sure I started a heck of a lot further from my goal weight than you did!
funny I was thinking about pants the other day....I've slowly moved from 34's to 36's and last year I did it.....38's. the hoarder in me refused to get rid of a lot of those too small jeans. I'm gonna wear those bastards again!

Its about 40 minutes, including the warmup, stretch, and cooldown, and there are 2 minutes worth of scheduled breaks bookending a solid non-stop block of about 24 minutes. That is it, just 2 minutes in the whole damned thing.

You wont feel bad about stopping for a bit, because Shaun T keeps walking around the room every so often, tapping people out telling them to go drink water.
