Parental Advice- Re: Xbox 360

Alright, my 11 year old son said a friend of his "gave" him his copy of Black Ops 2, because he thought he had lost it... got another copy and gave this other copy to my son.

I don't want my kids playing these violent video games, as it is, so I wouldn't buy this game for him.

Well, my son's friend's mom just called me and told me that they couldn't find the game anywhere... and they last remember playing it when my son was there.

My son then changed his story when confronted, saying that he was "borrowing" it and that his friend said that he could.

This is the third instance of him grabbing something that doesn't belong to him. He used my stored credit card in the XBOX to buy a bunch of credits to download games about 7-8 months ago. He took a gold peace sign necklace from my mom about 4 months ago. And now this.

So, should I sell the XBOX 360 or not? My instinct says yes. What say you?

TL;DR my son stole something for the 3rd time in the past 8 months, should I sell the XBOX?

I get it. You know what I meant though. I've seen some of the things you do with your kids, I know you have a good grasp on how to do things.

JFC. You really are a twunt.
So he was home alone while you were in NO or was there a spouse that allowed the situation to happen while you were gone? Did your son hack your XBox account in order to use the saved debit card information or did you forget to delete or pasword protect it?

Look, you might be a fantastic parent who goofed up in this one area. He might be a phenomenal kid who saw an opening. The key is to not only punish his mistakes but to realize what part we played in the situation. That is how we learn to parent better and that is how they learn to avoid repeating mistakes.

Yes, i would sell it, send a very strong message and nip this behavior in the bud.

Anything less than a very harsh lesson might lead him to think he can continue to get away with it.

I've raised two into adulthood and i definitely would.

Break it, then make your child run routes for 3 hours each day.

Not exactly. I am saying there is lax or inconsistent parenting if the child not only 'stole' a game he was not allowed to play but also had unfettered access to the internet and stored credit card info. There might be a pattern here but it involves more than just the kid.

These are types of issues you hear about for a 13-15 year old. Not at 11.

Huge issue which if you see from the child perspective adds up to inconsistent messages and unclear boundaries. We have all been there at one time or another. It is easy to blame the kid when this happens but many times they are just a symptom of a bigger problem.

I have a nephew that did something similar to this. He used his mom's CC to purchase credits for some crappy facebook game. He would take $10 or so at a time hoping that his mom would never catch on. His mom isn't computer savvy at all so he was able to pull it off for a few months. Once she discovered it, i looked into it and found that the purchases being made online were coming right from their own IP address.

He was ground for a few weeks.

The kid was 13.

Do you give your kid an allowance? Personally, i thought if his parents gave him a weekly or bi weekly allowance, then he wouldn't feel a need to steal.
