Underdog Mock (3/21)

Going with a mock today that is going to feature 100% underdogs -- guys who are sleepers who nobody has mocked to us yet on ChiefsPlanet.

As it turns out, it's extremely hard to do. I've mocked to the Chiefs nearly every player I really like already this offseason -- almost.

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs extend QB Alex Smith 6 years, $90m (when you break the numbers down, it will actually break down to 4 years, $60m, with something like $35m guaranteed), and S Eric Berry 6 years, $45m ($23m guaranteed). They will extend Justin Houston at some point during the 2015 season.

2. The Chiefs let walk: WR Kyle Williams, S Kendrick Lewis

3. The Chiefs sign WR/KR Jacoby Ford (Raiders) to a 1 year, $1m deal.

On with the show:

1.23. WR Allen Robinson, Penn State

One of the better route-runners in this class, Robinson isn't an amazing athlete but still manages to earn himself space. He projects as a true #1 in this class, mainly because of his excellent hands and his ability to use his big frame to shield off defenders.

3.87. OT Jack Mewhort, Ohio State

Mewhort's been a reliable blindside protector for the Buckeyes. He's competition with Stephenson and Fisher for both LT and RT duties on Day One.

4.120. NT Ryan Carrethers, Arkansas State

Yet the one thing that really jumps out about Carrethers is his stat sheet: how in the blue blazes does a 330 lbs guy record over 90 tackles in one season!? The answer can be found by looking at his tape against Louisiana-Lafayette, where he recorded 16 tackles in one game alone: Carrethers is a two-gapping machine. He is a brilliant read-react defender, holding up the OL and flowing to the ball (between the tackles). He isn't quite the pocket-collapser you'd want on the 1st or 2nd day from a guy his size, but Carrethers game reminds me so much of Glenn Dorsey's once Dorsey started flourishing in the 3-4. Carrethers would be great as a nose tackle in any two-gapping system. He's perfect for a bend-don't-break system.
5.151. OLB Derrell Johnson, Eastern Carolina

It'll be easier to determine where he falls in the draft projections after the ECU Pro Day at the end of the month, particularly his 40-time and his arm length. But here's what the tape says: Johnson is a pure 3-4 OLB, currently listed at 6'1" and in the 250s. He's very fast, and uses that speed to enthusiastically play the run sideline-to-sideline, though he definitely struggles in space in coverage. His forte is rushing the LOS, and he is very powerful and explosive doing so. He seems to have NFL strength now, and when that power is uncoiled, even OL from big programs seemed overwhelmed by him. The Chiefs should definitely consider going for Johnson in the midrounds, as I think he has starter potential. His weaknesses (coverage, tackling, breaking down in space) are coachable, and I just think he's a hidden treasure in this draft.
6.177. CB Walt Aiken, Liberty

Unfortunately, the Combine committed a tremendous error in not inviting Aiken to workout. Aiken looks very fast on tape, and even though he's only competing against inferior competition, he was able to hang with most receivers at Senior Bowl week -- which at least proves you've got the right material to work with. Did I mention he's long? 6'1", good bulk, and looks outstanding flipping his hips with deep speed. Aiken however, has essentially zero technique. He got by at Liberty by being bigger and faster than most of the people he was covering; he was far shakier and burned more frequently at the Senior Bowl. But it'll be super interesting to see where he ends up, and how much time he's given to develop.
6.184. RB John Spooney, Brown

Spooney is a track star at Ivy League stalwart Brown University, and a slight one at that: only 5'9", barely 180 lbs, he's at best a role player at the next level. But so is De'Anthony Thomas, and people can't stop splooging about the guy. Spooney is a ridiculous speedster who could be money for this team in limited snaps starting in 2015. He'd probably need to redshirt 2014 to (a.) learn how to pass protect, and (b.) learn how to carry the football properly, since he carries the ball one-armed against his chestplate which seems to slow down his already-sonic speed on the field.

Big fan of this guy
While I agree he doesn't have a lot of pass rush moves
his bull rush is very effective.
He would be a good compliment to Poe
