2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Why don't we forget about 5 starting pitchers. Just use 2-3 of them, and use our stellar bullpen. I mean honestly, how much worse would it be? No way it could be any worse.

Whats sad is, the worst guy in that rotation is better than our #1 this past season.

Hey at least the Glass family can be thrilled knowing the team they root for and would pay to see is winning. I seriously HATE the Glass family... they are a terrible group of people.

Tony Pena to interview with Red Sox

Updated: October 15, 2012, 3:43 PM ET
By Gordon Edes | ESPNBoston.com

The Boston Red Sox are set to interview New York Yankees bench coach Tony Pena for their managerial vacancy on Monday, a team spokesperson confirmed.

Pena will be the second candidate to interview for the position left open when the team fired Bobby Valentine the day after the season. Los Angeles Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach talked to the club about the job on Friday in Boston.

Baltimore Orioles third-base coach DeMarlo Hale will interview with the Red Sox on Thursday, the team confirmed. San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus also is scheduled to interview this week, according to a report on WEEI.com.
The Yankees, who are down 0-2 to the Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series, are off Monday, which freed up Pena for the interview. The 55-year-old former catcher played 18 seasons in the majors, including four in Boston, and managed the Kansas City Royals from 2002-2005. In 2003, he was named AL Manager of the Year. He resigned midway through the 2005 season after his team started 8-25.
Pena joined the Yankees' staff in 2006 and interviewed for their managerial opening after Joe Torre's departure. The team named Joe Girardi as skipper, and Pena has been on his staff since, serving as first-base coach and in his current role as bench coach.
Hale, 51, who was on Terry Francona's staff in Boston from 2006-2011, was not granted an interview by the Red Sox in their managerial search last winter and was not retained on Valentine's staff. He joined the Orioles shortly thereafter.
It's not yet known on which day Ausmus, 43, will interview for the job. He spent 18 years as a catcher in the majors before joining the Padres in 2010 as an assistant.
Wallach met with the Red Sox on Friday, had dinner with general manager Ben Cherington and his staff, and flew back to his home on the West Coast on Saturday.
"I thought it went well," said Wallach, a five-time All-Star as a third baseman who twice before has interviewed for big league managing jobs. His first was in 2006 with the Padres, and the second was in 2010 with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Wallach also said he doesn't know why the Red Sox did not ask to interview him last year before Valentine was hired.
"And I didn't ask them about it," he said.
The man widely considered the team's preferred candidate, Toronto manager John Farrell, is under contract with the Blue Jays for another year. As of Monday morning, Farrell had not been contacted regarding the Red Sox job, according to a baseball source.
Wallach said he was confident the Red Sox viewed him as a serious candidate for the job.
"I don't think they would have brought me here unless they were serious," he said. "But I understand the process that has to be gone through. I honestly believe they wouldn't waste their time."

They started the Arizona Fall league down here. And out in Surprise is a team combined of the Red Sox, Mets, Rangers, Cardinals and Royals. Anyone have anything they know about these young kids on the roster?

Orlando Calixte is someone to watch. He's not going to stick at SS, but he's got good pop, is athletic and has a good arm. There's some hope he can play 2B long-term.

Whit Merrifield is a future UTIL guy, maybe.

Brian Fletcher is the next Kila/etc. Organizational guy who puts up decent power numbers but probably doesn't do anything more than be a AAAA player.

Justin Marks is a marginal pitching prospect who might be a 4 or 5 starter.

Edwin Carl could be a bullpen arm down the road.

They didn't really send any stars to AFL this year. I like Calixte, though.

Royals hire Maloof and David to split duties as Seitzer’s replacement

By BOB DUTTON
The Kansas City Star

Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/10/24...#storylink=cpy

It will take two hitting coaches, the Royals believe, to get a youthful lineup to realize its full potential; two former big-league hitting coaches who already have a working relationship with nearly all of the club’s cornerstone players.

The Royals raided their minor-league staff Wednesday morning in hiring Jack Maloof and Andre David to fill the duties held over the previous four seasons by Kevin Seitzer. The Royals fired Seitzer one day after the 2012 season ended.

Maloof, 63, will serve as the primary hitting coach and be on the bench during games. David, 54, will be an assistant whose game-time duties must, by rules, be restricted. They will be determined at a later time.

Manager Ned Yost indicated the two will split responsibilities while providing a consistent message. He previously cited the need for the Royals to improve their power production as a reason for replacing Seitzer.

“I think we’ve got a group of young power hitters who are capable of hitting homers,” Yost said. “Our offense was built more around singles and doubles. We’ve got a big field, and we drive to the big part in the gaps.

“But it’s difficult to get three or four singles in a row to score a run. We have to have the ability to open it up a little more, use the power that we have in our offense to take advantage of a quick strike. A walk, a base-hit and boom – there’s three runs.”

The concept of employing two hitting coaches is growing. The Phillies hired ex-Royals first baseman Wally Joyner earlier this week to serve as Steve Henderson’s assistant. St. Louis, Atlanta and San Diego employed two hitting coaches this season.

Royals officials contend their core young players – specifically, first baseman Eric Hosmer and third baseman Mike Moustakas – demonstrated plus power throughout their minor-league careers that has yet to manifest itself in the big leagues.

The familiarity that Maloof and David have with Hosmer, Moustakas and the roster’s other homegrown players will, the Royals believe, aid in unlocking that potential.

Maloof recently completed his fifth year on the club’s minor-league staff, including his third as the minor-league hitting coordinator. He was Atlanta’s minor-league hitting coordinator from 2005-07 and spent three seasons as the Marlins’ hitting coach.

David filled many roles within the organization over the last 14 seasons, including a brief tour as the major-league hitting coach from May 30, 2005 to May 1, 2006. He spent the last three years as the hitting coach for Surprise in the Arizona Rookie League.
