It's amazing to me how terrible this offseason looks right now. The Alex Smith trade really set the tone. Some of the free agent moves were okay, but there's far too much that looks bad to counterbalance. This really does smell like 2009 all over again, but with a veteran head coach that's probably 7 years past his prime instead of a rookie head coach that's clearly over his head.

(I really want to like Andy Reid, he seems like a great guy, but it's just head-scratching move after head-scratching move)

I still think Smith was the best QB available. Maybe almost every GM is wrong about this QB draft class. I doubt it. Geno obviously proved he is a dumbass, predicting the Jets to make the playoffs.

Oh my God, let's fire him!

I was on the Geno bandwagon, but I'm willing to keep things in perspective. When guys like Kiper and McShay insisted that there are no elite quarterbacks in this draft, we called them ****ing idiots and ignored them. But guess what? Based upon the first 3 rounds of the draft, it sure looks like every GM in the NFL agrees: THERE ARE NO ELITE QUARTERBACKS IN THE DRAFT THIS YEAR.

Given that, the only choice Andy Reid had was to get the best free agent quarterback available. The Alex Smith haters on Chiefsplanet insist that Alex Smith is simply Matt Cassel Part Deux, but I find that hard to believe. Cassel elevated suckage to an art form. Alex Smith looked a helluva lot better the last two years than Cassel ever did.

The fact is that there weren't any Drew Brees type free agents out there. So Dorsey and Reid are putting together the best roster they can under the circumstances.

How about waiting before the new Chiefs actually hold a practice, play a game, or even play a full season before you declare Andy Reid to be 7 years past his prime and you give up on the Chiefs altogether? It's fine to be a fan and to examine and criticize what the team is doing, but there's a hell of a lot of people on this forum who aren't nearly as smart as they think they are.

Thank God we at least don't have to read all of the pillowbiter postings about the Chocolate Penii any more.

Reid has always been over rated.

I don't really care that every GM and talent evaluator has this QB class rated so poorly, I would rather have taken a chance with a couple of these QBs early than trade for Smith.

That's certainly a reasonable position. I actually agree with the second part of it.

But some guys around here are saying "**** the Chiefs" and they're telling us how they'll become fans of whatever team drafts Geno Smith. I've read your posts long enough to know that you're not jumping off the deep end like they are.

I guess we'll find out in the next few years if Andy Reid is overrated. I'm hoping he's not.

Agreed.

If anything, it just shows how smart Reid/Dorsey were to go out and get a QB so we didn't have to endure another horrific year like we just did.

can anyone show me this extension Alex Smith has signed? Anyone?

God forbid we trade for a stopgap using a pick that literally has a 30% success rate the past decade.

Someone go find 10 pro bowlers in the last 10 years that were selected between picks 30 and 40.

We are all geared to expect the organization to protect the QB even if it hurts the team. Even though its a different regime, I do it as well. In the back of my mind I see them protecting Alex even though what Pioli did has no impact on the current situation. Hopefully they put Alex to the test and if he doesn't work out they aren't afraid to see it.

1. Nothing I said has anything to do with Geno Smith.

2. This is why I say Andy Reid is probably 7 years past his prime (and I should have said 8):

2000 11-5
2001 11-5 conference championship
2002 12-4 conference championship
2003 12-4 conference championship
2004 13-3 - superbowl - fairly clear line of demarcation
2005 6-10
2006 10-6
2007 8-8
2008 9-6-1 conference championship
2009 11-5
2010 10-6
2011 8-8 - with perhaps the most talented roster in the NFL
2012 4-12 - see above

I am not saying he will fail here. I have no idea what he will do here. What I am saying is that, based on the last 8 years, I was not excited about the hire. This is not Andy Reid circa 2004, winning 12 or 13 games a year and fielding a truly contending team. This is Andy Reid, 66-61-1 since 2005. And the last two years in Philadelphia may be among of the worst seasons I've ever seen from a roster that loaded. It's even worse than the Chargers annual woes. So that's what I mean by "past his prime". And I don't think it's an unfair statement to make.

As far as "giving up on the Chiefs", well, I wouldn't be here if that was the case.

I think the Rams and Ravens are killing it this draft. I wouldn't say that the Chiefs are doing that bad, certainly not bottom 5.
