Shooting at Arrowhead- Chiefs player commits suicide

No details yet. Just came across on the news.

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

And just so it is clear, so that everybody knows what I'm talking about (since I was apparently the only one listening at the time), some of the things Kevin read (not said, READ) on the air from the report seemed to:

1) corroborate the anonymous friend that emailed Deadspin and
2) contradict the Chiefs' statements that they had no idea there was a problem

For example, the report said Belcher and his girlfriend were receiving couples counseling, setup BY THE CHIEFS, because they were fighting about money. That's one of the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Had a conversation today with someone who had first hand knowledge from someone who was in the parking lot when it went down, couple hundred feet away.

Didn't see it happen but was in the lot.

Based on what they told me, what was said here was pretty spot on. Said, Belcher called his agent on his way to the stadium and was pacing out in the parking lot when Pioli pulled up. Asked Scott to call Gibbs and Romeo to come out and talk to him. When the police pulled up they formed a perimeter, he took a few steps and shot himself.

I read the counseling thing somewhere today.

Got it. Had to stop listening at 4 so I am rather curious about his change of tune. I find it strange that Crennel and Pioli would approach a man with a gun if they knew he was battling drug abuse or head injuries which might make him not only unpredictible but dangerous.

I guess that's why the Chiefs were spinning shit not 2 hours after the shooting. Clark would talk with anyone that would listen to him yesterday after a hiatus of what, about 2 months of silence?

So the Chiefs arranged for couples counseling because they were fighting over money. Do we know if it was a financial counselor or a family counselor. I mean the Chiefs could have arranged to talk about fiances with an attorney or CPA and that would not mean anything unusual, IMO.

It's all just freaking crazy.

Some of us (including me) were SO worried today about Pioli becoming a sympathetic figure in this because people get so emotional about this stuff.

And here were are, in the same day, informed that it's possible these people KNEW Belcher had problems and tried to keep it a secret.

Myself, I don't know how to feel right now. It's just a sick feeling. But I do know that a lot of the same people that, emotionally, wanted to exonerate Pioli for EVERYTHING because of what he witnessed, will be the SAME people that crucify him if it comes out the Chiefs knew about this and didn't tell anybody.

No clue.

I also heard a former Cleveland Brown today (his name escapes me at the moment) say that teams offer counseling all the time but few players take advantage because they're viewed as "informants" for management.

Dysfunction on so many levels.

Report: Jovan Belcher Was Drunk And Out With Another Woman The Night Before The Murder-Suicide
Dom Cosentino

SI.com's Thayer Evans cites a law enforcement official who says Belcher was out "partying" on Friday night—and not with Kasandra Perkins:

He had been with a woman in the Power and Light District, an area of bars in downtown Kansas City, according to the official who is familiar with statements made by the woman to police.

Belcher and the woman had become separated at some point and he went to her apartment in a complex in Kansas City, but she wasn't there, the official said. According to two of the woman's neighbors, Belcher was intoxicated and they let him stay in their apartment so he could get some sleep.

Belcher asked the neighbors to wake him by 6:30 a.m. because he had a team meeting to get to, telling them, "I'll get fined if I don't make it."

If the Chiefs were facilitating counseling for Belcher and his lady, I'm not going to crush them for not disclosing it in a statement (maybe they can't). That's supporting a player in need and protecting them in the aftermath. Zero problem with it if that was indeed the case.

Well I surmised that early in the thread.

Lots of dysfunction. I am sure we are at the tip of the iceberg.
