My niece could use some prayers
Long story very very short.....My niece has been in the hospital for just over a week. She had some infection in her blood that started with a broken leg a couple months ago. Progressively got worse over the last week & she is now being life watched from St. Francis in Wichita to Children's Mercy in KC this morning. Her kidneys & liver are shutting down and they don't know why.

Any good thoughts, prayers, whatever you have - she can use them right now.

Finally a little bit of good news.

She's been sedated since mid morning yesterday. They've done 2 blood transfusions and have her on some steroids that seem to helping.

Mid afternoon, she started to show signs of improvement. She went from being on 100% oxygen to around 30% by the end of the night. Her liver started to show signs of being functional again, urine output was coming up, and the doctors started changing their tone to WHEN she gets better.

This morning, her mom said that nothing happened overnight. Which is a good thing. She has seem to struggle at night, or have more problems overnight. Her fever did go up a little bit to around 100, but nothing like the 104+ that we've seen and they dealt with it pretty quickly. They also are seeing some reduction in the fluid on her lungs.

Just in the past hour or so, they were finally able to get a feeding tube in which they weren't able to do yesterday.

So, all in all, it's some improvement. Might not be much, but we'll take anything we can get at this point.

I can't thank everyone enough that have been thinking about her, praying for her. It means a lot.

Valley Center community holds prayer vigil for sick 13-year-old girl

VALLEY CENTER, KAN. --- Family and friends are praying for a 13-year-old Valley Center girl who's fighting for her life.

Earlier this summer, Allie Johnson broke her leg playing softball. Following surgery, the 7th grader developed an infection. Now she's at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, in serious condition.

Saying prayers while wiping away tears Wednesday night, the Valley Center community sent its love and support to Allie and her family.

"We all miss her so much and we love her so much. She's such a great person," said Kaleo Vincent.

She and her friends have known Allie since third grade.

"It's been really hard on most of us," Vincent said. "We're all really close with her. We all went to her birthday party."

The girls haven't been able to hang out with their friend much this summer. And since school started last Thursday, they haven't seen her at all.

But those who know Allie best, say she's a fighter, and have faith she'll get through this.

"I think us being here tonight will really help her," Vincent said. "Just keeping her in our prayers and just keep thinking about her. And hoping that she's going to get better."

You say that doesn't sound like much but to those of us that aren't as close to her as you are, that actually sounds like A LOT. That's significant progress in my eyes.

If there's one organ that is resilient, it's the liver. Provided they've stopped the source of the damage, the liver can and likely WILL heal. I've known two people with stage 4 liver failure that are still alive, one of them was diagnosed 21 years ago.

This is great news.
