In 2008 and 2009, Philip Rivers led the league in yards per attempt and adjusted yards per attempt (which includes a 45-yard penalty for interceptions and a 20-yard bonus for touchdowns), making him arguably the best statistical quarterback in the league.

He also ranked in the top two in adjusted net yards per attempt in both seasons, which includes sack data. Despite a declining running game, Rivers made the Chargers’ offense elite by hooking up with Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd for numerous big plays. The 2009 Chargers passing attack led all teams in yards per attempt, adjusted yards per attempt, net yards per attempt and adjusted net yards per attempt. San Diego also topped the charts in yards per completion, and both Jackson and Floyd averaged more than 17 yards per catch. It seemed as if Rivers, Jackson, Gates and Floyd were as dangerous a quartet as any in the league.

As it turns out, maybe San Diego just had the most dangerous man in the league.

What’s happened to the Chargers’ passing attack after those two dominant passing seasons? Rivers ranks first in adjusted net yards per attempt again in 2010, and has been the best quarterback in the league. But that’s the only way things look the same in San Diego.

Vincent Jackson hasn’t played a game all season, thanks to a suspension and a holdout. In his place, Malcom Floyd gained 498 receiving yards in the first five weeks of the season, but injured his hamstring in Week 6 and has not played since. That just meant more for tight end Antonio Gates, who had 663 yards and 9 touchdowns in San Diego’s first eight games. But on Sunday, Gates had to sit out because of injuries to his feet. O.K., what about the Chargers’ third wide receiver (and fourth weapon in the passing game)? That would be Legedu Naanee, who had 242 yards in that role in 2009. But Naanee, like Floyd, has an injured hamstring; he hasn’t caught a pass since Week 4. Target number 5? That would be Patrick Crayton, traded from the Cowboys in early September for a seventh-round pick. The next man up in the passing game was Craig Davis, known as Buster, but he went on injured reserve this week with a groin injury. Enter Seyi Ajirotutu.

How did Rivers do against Houston this weekend minus his surefire Hall of Fame tight end (Gates), his top three wide receivers (Jackson, Floyd, Naanee) and a former first-round pick who has been on the team for four years (Davis)? Playing with a guy who was traded for a seventh-round pick two months ago (Crayton) and an undrafted free agent called up to the team two weeks ago (Ajirotutu), Rivers was, as always, magnificent. He threw for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 23 throws. Ajirotutu gained 111 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. He became just the second undrafted rookie wide receiver to grab 100 yards and two touchdowns in a game in the past 25 years. Crayton added another 70 yards on three receptions. Since Week 9 of the 2007 season, the nine-year veteran tight end Randy McMichael had caught exactly two touchdown passes. In Week 9 against Houston, he caught another two. And, most important, the Chargers won. At 3-5, and only a game and a half behind division leader Kansas City, San Diego is back in the hunt for the A.F.C. West division crown.

In Week 1, Naanee had 110 yards against the Chiefs. In Week 5, Floyd gained 213 yards against the Raiders. Crayton caught 6 for 117 the following week, while Gates topped the century mark in Weeks 3, 4 and 8.

Ajirotutu’s performance against Houston made him the fifth Charger with over 100 receiving yards in a game. Before this season, only three teams have had six players gain at least 100 yards in a game in the same season.

In 1984, Kellen Winslow, Wes Chandler, Charlie Joiner, Bobby Duckworth, Pete Holohan and Eric Sievers hit the century mark for Dan Fouts and the Chargers.

Four years later, Dan Marino helped Mark Clayton, Mark Duper, Jim Jensen, Ferrell Edmunds, Fred Banks and Scott Schwedes each gain 100 receiving yards in at least one game.

And in 2003, Tony Gonzalez, Eddie Kennison, Johnnie Morton, Dante Hall, Priest Holmes and Derrick Blaylock had 100-yard games for Trent Green and Kansas City. In fact, only 20 other teams have had five receivers top 100 yards in a season before this year. With Naanee, Crayton, Gates, Floyd and Ajirotutu already at five, Rivers is one big Vincent Jackson game away from tying the N.F.L. record. Rivers might have another record on his radar, too: the single-season passing mark. Rivers is just the second player to have 2,900 passing yards after his team’s first nine games.

Rivers isn’t the only star quarterback dueling short-handed. Peyton Manning’s targets have been cursed by the same voodoo doll. Fortunately for Manning, his top target, Reggie Wayne, has stayed healthy. But the star tight end Dallas Clark was placed on injured reserve in mid-October after fracturing his wrist. Pierre Garcon missed two weeks with a hamstring injury. Anthony Gonzalez has had yet another season lost to injury, finishing with just five catches. Austin Collie has been dealing with hand and foot injuries the past few weeks, then sustained a brutal hit that knocked him out of the game against the Eagles on Sunday.

The Colts’ top running backs, Joseph Addai and Donald Brown, have been battling injuries for most of the season. Then third-string back Mike Hart hurt his left ankle. Still, Manning ranks in the top five in both adjusted yards per attempt and adjusted net yards per attempt.

Jacoby Ford was all over the field on Sunday against Kansas City, catching six passes for 148 yards and returning four kickoffs for 158 yards, including one touchdown. Ford became the first player with 300 all-purpose yards in a game since Week 15 of last season, when Josh Cribbs also carved up the Chiefs. Ford is the first rookie to crack the 300-yard mark in a game since Adrian Peterson in 2007. Ford also became the first player since the merger with 140 receiving yards and 140 kick return yards in the same game.

Brett Favre set a personal record by throwing for 446 yards against the Cardinals this weekend. He also became the oldest player to throw for 400 yards in a game, breaking the mark held by Warren Moon. But believe it or not, Favre doesn’t hold the single-game passing record for either the Vikings or the Packers.

On the Trent Green front - He's really becoming a good football analyst for NFL Networks. I enjoy listening to him break down players and plays. Also, he's going to be the color guy for Westwood Radio for the Thursday night game, for those interested.

And of course it was us that has allowed the last two players in the league to gain 300 all-purpose yards.
