Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

If it's Joeckel as I said before need he'll to play at HOF levels almost immediately to justify the pick.If it's anything under elite then the selection is a bust.

I don't think they will this year.

He'll be signed or traded.

It would be moronic to pay him that much but we CAN force him to play for it if it's the best move...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I'm fine with the way this is playing out.

I think Albert is fine as a tackle but overrated, and he isn't worth committing $40 million to over 4 or 5 years.

We move him to Miami on draft day, we draft a LT who is 22 and has a higher ceiling, and with the second round pick we basically got Alex Smith for free.

I was one who felt like Smith was the right move with the lack of QB options this offseason but I felt we overpaid. This helps it all make more sense.

We won't have an overpaid RT or an overrated LT we are going to lose next season anyway. Branden seems to care more about getting guaranteed money than where he plays (not that I would e any different) so we can just wish him the best and collect our 2nd rounder.

So, by that logic, if we got Alex Smith for free, then we gave up Brandon Albert for nothing?

If he won't take less than what he's asking Miami for, then the equation is deal him now or pay him for a malcontent year and then watch him walk

This I disagree with.

We settled at QB and then traded off a solid (not spectacular, but solid) LT for a CHANCE at an all pro LT.

Yes, bigger upside, but it's still just a POSSIBILITY. All rookies are possibilities while we know what we're trading off...

Well, then you can't really complain about getting Alex Smith instead of Geno Smith, since the same unknown factor applies.

If we get a second round pick back, then we essentially traded Albert for Alex Smith, which actually seems pretty legit to me.

If we can use that second rounder to land Nassib, Manuel, Barkley, or Wilson, then I'm actually totally fine with this whole scenario, even if we take Joeckel at #1.

Is Geno + Albert + our high second better than Joeckel/Fisher + Alex Smith + Tyler Wilson?

I have no idea, and frankly no one else does yet, either. My one and only concern going into this draft was making sure we had a QB that we could point to and say "this guy! This guy is the future of this franchise!"

I wanted it to be Geno, but if it's someone else, I will be satisfied, if unexcited.

What planet do you live on?

HOF levels immediately? Do you read the garbage you write? All you're doing is basically declaring a pick a failure from day 1 so you can spew your typical garbage on this board.

Seeing this plays out, almost makes you wonder if Dorsey's letting Albert and his people see the market, in order to re-sign him here for less money.

Doesn't seem like the popular belief, just playing devil's advocate.

At the end of the day, this is a business. I love Albert, but if he's not willing to reduce his asking price, then I can't fault the Chiefs for the move.

You draft the guy at #1 for his career, not for his first year. That goes for whatever position you take.

A DE or QB is going to take several years to become the player you drafted them to be, no reason you would think another position should be that guy on day 1.

At this point....I just don't give a **** anymore. If they take a LT at 1.1.....I'll find out who we picked after the draft is over.

Fair point but if we settled at QB then keeping Albert instead of drafting Lt at 1.1 is also settling. Either way would be a risk.

Certainly keeping Albert entails risk - risks about health, about signability next year, the opportunity cost of passing on Joeckel/Fischer/whoever who have higher ceilings.

If we are only looking for the safe bets, Alex Smith and Luke Joeckel are the moves least likely to be busts. Of course, avoiding unnecessary risk is not all its about, and Reid obviously thinks the lynchpin here is that he thinks Smith has better football ahead of him.

We will see... This should be a fun week.

They'll be alot of this going on. People becaue they're butt hurt will set impossible parameters to judge Joekell by so they can scream bust and point fingers at Reid and Dorsey. Should make for some good reading.
