Part of me says that I hate the formula of automatically bringing in the closer in the 9th inning. Would have been nice to send Kelvin Herrera back out for the 9th inning. If you keep changing pitchers when everybody is pitching well, eventually you're going to put in a pitcher who won't. Mendoza, Crow and Herrera all pitched well.

But then I remember the last Royals manager who deviated from the standard closer formula was Trey ****ing Hillman, the idiot who destroyed Gil Meche's arm.

Why not let Crow pitch the 8th and if he gets in trouble, bring Herrerea. If he clears the 8th, bring Holland. If Holland starts to stink up the 9th then you have Herrera in reserve. But nooooooo....

This loss is definitely on Yost. You don't bring in a RH to face the numbers 3 & 4 LH hitters. RH Herrera threw only 13 pitches in the 8th and had 2 strikeouts so, if he's gonna have a righty out there, stick with the hot hand. LH Tim Collins was the best option; then, if he's in trouble after facing Utley and Howard, bring in Holland to take on Young.

We've heard how Yost is able to set his lineup with LH & RH hitters alternating throughout. He knows the advantages of pitching-hitting match-ups. For him to have a righty facing 2 dangerous veteran lefties is absolutely stupid!!

The sabermetric world agrees with you. The save statistic should be abolished, and we should recognize and reward relief pitchers monetarily for serving in a "fireman" role.

No one is doing that, so you kinda have to go with it. If one day some Royals manager does what no one else in the world wants to do, we can support that decision then. (though I'm sure the ignorant Royals fans who casually follow the team will yell about this new-fangled idea of not having a closer)
