Yeah, but a lot of them had also only played with Huard or Thigpen. Baby steps.

What is the next deadline on a long-term contract with Brandon Albert? I was thinking July 15th or so.

Nothing earth shattering, so didn't deserve its own thread. But a reminder of the importance of this week.

Thus, if neither player signs an extension in the next eight days, neither can sign a new deal until after the season is over.

Predictably, the agents for both players will be talking to the Broncos and Chiefs this week. The Chiefs and Albert’s representative have long planned to talk this week. The Denver Post reported on Sunday that the Broncos and Clady will talk this week.

I think the odds are higher that Albert re-signs this week, but nothing would surprise me.

If neither player signs by the deadline, I do not think it will be a terrible sign. Deals can easily get done after the season and before free agency starts next March.

Would be awesome to get a deal done for Albert, but I won't be fretting if nothing get's done.

Personally I don't think they are going out of their way to really sign BA long term. My opinion only, but think they're goin thru the motions, but have every intention of playing out the 1 yr tag deal and let him walk, thus moving Fish to the left next year.

Signing BA to a long term deal is going to help our otherwise constrained salary cap. We have alot of dead money on the books this year, and may need some contract help just to get all our rookies signed.

In addition, it gives us two good tackles for the next 4-5 years, which is a very good position to be in. I don't think the coaching staff particularly cares where they line up, and BA won't really care once he is signed long-term as well. The only one who will eventually start to care is Fisher, but he has several years before he has to worry about that.

And, when the NFL signs a new TV contract it is expected to be for quite a bit more, which will raise the salary cap and salary floor. Large guarantee money with a fairly backloaded contract is probably the fiscally responsible thing to do in this case.

Finally, it will make some of the anti-Fish people to have to shut up if we weren't basically swapping BA + 1st overall pick for Fisher.

How many tackles in the NFL are "playing at a high level" at age 33 or 34? Besides that, Albert is barely above average at age 28 and he'll be 29 mid-season.

Based on his actions this off-season, I seriously doubt that he'll go for a backloaded contract, unless he receives $24 million or more guaranteed.

And then he's still on the books in 2015.

How is that not coming right up against the cap when you look at the fact we have to sign the 1.1 draft pick in Fisher? And we have over 14 million in dead money, which is obviously a big part of that, along with Albert's 9 mill.

BA has played five years in this league, one contract, and you already trying to put the fork in him?

There are plenty of players that play well, especially with a move to right tackle to prolong their career. Eric Winston, Locklear for the Giants, Winston Justice, Todd Herremans, David Stewart, Tyson Clabo, etc.. All of these players are between six and ten years in the league and are still productive and playing at a relatively high level.

$24 million guaranteed or so sounds absolutely right. I didn't mean a low signing bonus and very low first two years. Not THAT backloaded. No one in their prime would agree to that.

Good, we want him on the books in 2015. You think he is going to go from his prime to absolute crap in two years? That's one hell of a prediction

The rookie salary pool is already figured in against our current cap number...

Rookies salaries are included in our salary cap as soon as they are drafted, but they are included at the minimum active list salary, which is roughly $405,000 this year. Clearly Fisher is going to exceed that by quite a bit.

There is no separate rookie salary pool, that is just minimum and maximum values which the team must/cannot exceed when signing their rookies.

http://www.overthecap.com/teamcap.ph...iefs&Year=2013

However, it looks like the Chiefs rolled over 14 million salary cap space from 2012 into 2013, so that would alleviate the problem, at least per Adam Teicher.

Here is an old salary article, but it does have the carry-over for all NFL teams.

http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2...p-room-by-team

It has our carry-over of $14,079,650, giving us a team salary cap of $132,842,454.

An article on the salary cap that claims we really have $20,000 in free cap room after we sign Fisher.
