Those schools wouldn't get added today (other than Vanderbilt which is the token private school needed by every conference to skirt public disclosure requirements.

Right, but why are they kept around? Seems odd to keep welfare recipients. Like Wash State, I read they drew something like 24,000 per football game two years ago. Contribute nothing, middle of nowhere, sucks. Why do schools in LA and Seattle and Bay tv markets continue to toss welfare checks at those slugs? Or at Oregon State?

I know Florida and LSU and Bama need patsies to pulverize. Still, it's odd.

I think most would take Ole Miss and South Carolina over Iowa State. Why does the Big12 keep them?

Iowa State is one of a handful of teams to be bowl and tournament eligible two years in a row... They have relatively new coaches who are both taking the programs nowhere but up from where they are.

And every conference would still prefer to have Ole Miss and South Carolina.

Sure they do but there's an enormous difference between discussing whether it was wise to add a prospective school a year ago (TCU/WVA) vs schools that have been in their respective leagues for 8 decades. I am sure you know that. Furthermore setting that aside adding one dog b/c other leagues have schools that you may perceive to be weak members isn't a very good reason to do so.

Arkansas and South Carolina are more recent additions and thus more comparable. We all know Vanderbilt wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hades in getting an invitation to join the SEC in 2013. Don't really need to spend much time on them other than to say whatever expansion has become none of these leagues are kicking out 80 yr charter members, at least not yet.

Arkansas and South Carolina fit the mold of what expansion has been about for the SEC since 1992, which is to add large state schools that expand the league's footprint bringing new TV sets under their tent. Both have taken advantage of what league membership has done for them and have grown over time and are strong members now.

The MS schools have like Vanderbilt been in the league I believe since its inception or darn near. MS on a yearly basis is at or near the top in terms of producing NFL talent on a per capita basis. Obviously as things are viewed in 2013 a league would probably only add one of the two (Ole Miss) if they had it to do all over again. Regardless they bring enough to the table as far as in state talent goes and adding to the footprint between them that collectively the league is far better off with them than without.

The Big XII already had 3 Texas schools. Adding a tiny 4th one didn't given them anything they didn't already have.

I would guess that the conference charters allow teams to remain members as long as they remain in good standing.

Frankly the only reason to add them would be in order to maintain the B12's television contract partner agreements (getting back to ten member institutions). The leagues new TV deal has to do w/ the growth of the sport as a whole, not what a tiny private school in a state the league already has three members in brought to the table.

Dude I have no idea why you're defending them. It's ok to be critical and still be a fan of the league. I am.

Getting into stuff like that would be extremely short sighted. That and what Saul said...I would imagine there are no provisions for taking that kind of action in any of the charters and furthermore one can only imagine the legal can of worms that would be opened up. Your last point is salient. No matter how it's sliced by virtue of someone winning and someone losing there will always be bottom feeders in a league. Wazzu is interesting, they have still managed to get to two Rose Bowls in the past 20 years which is more than can be said for some schools with what should be stronger programs.

So here is my question...and an honest one considering I really haven't followed the story much other than the original one that came out. How will the recent violations hurt the Athletics programs? Seems that they were more than just minor violations....

The Big 12 is going to be abysmal in basketball next year. OSU will be really good. Kansas will be good, but I don't expect them to be great. Everyone else is hoping to make the tournament.

So.....you ever been to a Gamecock football game? I'm guessing not because you wouldn't be thinking they are a net zero. 80k size stadium and even when they weren't playing well the stadium was pretty much packed.
