Do some research and find a good financial adviser. A really good one is worth every penny you pay them.

If you are unsure, then just buy a SPYDER fund or a safety stock with a high dividend like GE.

This. They have to follow "company rules", rarely think for themselves and usually don't have a clue where to put your money (Emerging markets, foreign, domestic companies, etc.).

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's a scam. And there's no guarantee whatsoever that the money you invest wil be there in three, four or five years, let alone 20.

If you aren't willing to put in the effort to properly analyze stocks then you should stay away from individual stocks.

Also, a good sell discipline is essential. Average retail investors actually do reasonably well at picking stocks. The difference between them and the pros is sell discipline and portfolio management.

I'm assuming you have some sort of 401k/Roth Mutual fund and are just looking to supplement that with higher risk/reward options?

Yes, I work in the industry. The sales force is just the sales force. They sell what they are given to sell.

If you're talking about an individual, I'd agree. If you're talking about an Edward R. Jones, Merrill-Lynch, etc., I'd disagree.

Most good financial advisers that I know have a $2 million dollar minimum initial investment requirement.

Maybe I'm the exception, but I've worked with the same guy for 18 years. He started his own firm and my investment portfolio has consistently outperformed the market. When I first started with this gentleman I told him I wanted to retire at 55 and what type of lifestyle I wanted when I retire. So far, I'm ahead if schedule for reaching that goal.

I work in the industry. Our advisors sell the product I work on. We tell them what they can say and how they can say it (and our advisor base has a higher financial knowledge than most). Just about every financial advisor works off of a software package that tells them what they should recommend you. They are sales people.
