Any Adobe Illustrator experts here?

I am very new to A.I. But I have received CS6 for my Norooz present and I'm trying to clean up the edges of a black on white (and some grey) logo (JPG file) by saving it in .ai and using the 'Image trace' tool. It cleans up the edges pretty well but two problems are occurring here:

1- The grey part vanishes when I use 'Image trace.'

2- There are some hard corners that I want to keep, but when I use trace it does unwanted softening but replacing the hard corners with curves.

How can I get around these problems? Is it some sort of setting that I need to change in either or both cases. Is there a better tool than 'Image trace' to do the job.

I'm doing this for a friend who needs it ASAP. The design is very strong, but the presentation is killing me. Help please.

Live trace takes away all color in most of the settings, any light colors will generally turn to white and dark to black. There are different settings like 3 color and so on to live trace and even though its better than previous iterations its still not something you want to use like a crutch. The best way to get exactly what you want is by recreating it, otherwise use Photoshop to clean the edges and make changes to individual sections using the selection or magic wand tool.
