It's a complete joke, and another reason why I continue to hate almost every hardware developer Google works with. Google is consistently held back more by their friends than their enemies.

[edit]

Obviously, I don't mean no R&D. But compared to Apple developing hardward and software from nothing, and Motorola being given a running version of Honeycomb specifically designed for the Xoom...
Because they are idiots and looking more for a quick buck...

The great thing about Android is that ANYBODY can jump in and we should soon see that happen. I expect to see a slew of $400 tablets by Christmas of this year... and a drop to $300 by the next year. Those two aren't a 1:1 comparison. Netflix blows Blockbuster out of the water.

Ah, see I actually prefer Blockbuster now... but it's not much of a debate since both will soon be offered on all platforms soon enough.

I disagree. I have had both and I prefer Blockbuster. Points can be made for both... neither "blows" the other away anymore.

Just like Netflix, Hulu is not my thing BUT it is coming to Android shortly... The damn SDK JUST came out, give them a little bit of time!

Regardless, your argument about FLASH fails.

How about this... Honeycomb doesn't YET have all the apps but soon will, the iPad will NEVER have FLASH. So if you absolutely need HULU Plus for the next couple of months.. and can skip FLASH because of it... go ahead get the iPad.

It's just stupid not to wait.

I've been waiting for Netflix on my EVO for months, and now it looks like it isn't going to happen. Point being, "it's coming, just give it some time" doesn't necessarily fill me with confidence with as many variables as there are out there.

It's like buying a movie from the itunes store and not being able to play it on anything except iTunes. That's a bad decision. But if I have Netflix, I can view that content on my PC, phone, iPad, Wii, PS3 or Xbox at no extra charge. Blockbuster is more limited in where you can view it, and charges extra fees for certain types of viewing (at least, it used to when I last checked into it).

You don't know that it will NEVER have Flash. There are several apps that are in development and current use that convert Flash elements for iPad. I hope it gets native Flash just so people will stop bitching. And the new Flash isn't so bad, so that helps.

Yeah, that's not at all how it works now. Plus Blockbuster has more current releases, etc etc etc Again, I can see where people would prefer one over the other, I just don't think either is significantly better. Moot point since my guess is that Netflix will be offered on Android (Tegra based tablets at least) by Summer.

ok, the apps that convert FLASH elements suck. Apple would do well to adopt FLASH support but Jobs' ego is NOT likely to let that happen. Chalk that one up to a LONG LONG LONG shot... and unlike the other conjecture in this thread... iOS getting FLASH isn't based on anything other than wishful thinking.

Ughhhhhhhh. I hate this response! Exactly! Google will never truly compete as long as they rely on Motorola, Samsung, and HTC.

I think you're wrong, personally. I don't think we will see significant drops. I think we'll see price parity, to some extent, but not really. The manufacturers simply don't care. They'll continue to roll out new versions of phones, and let the carriers advertise them and do business as usual.

We've yet to see the tablet market develop. IF it develops like the laptop market, than perhaps we'll see market pressure. But if you think that Motorola, Samsung, and HTC aren't just counting down the days to add motoblur, Touchwiz, and whatever HTC's brand is called to tablets, you're delusional. We're only about to see an increase in junkware and proprietary skins.

But, you consistently miss the big problem. It isn't hardware, it's software upgrades. Even if Motorola, or Samsumg, or whoever puts out a better product, what good does that do me when I know that they have no desire to support my product long term? Why should I invest in their product when they are more concerned about creating new products and their increasing new sales? They aren't in the business of software - google is! They want to sell hardware!

This is almost exactly 180 degrees wrong. IF android hadn't hired Duarte then you'd be spot on... go out and look at Honeycomb... it doesn't NEED a skin or add on ... with the NEW Android OS, hardware has become just like the PC market. I can buy any tablet and install new versions of the OS as I see fit.

Take everything you have seen regarding Android phones and throw it out the window... the landscape has changed.

Let's look at the list of manufacturers that will be releasing tablets soon...

Motorola
Samsung
HTC
HP
Sony
Dell
Toshiba
Viewsonic
Asus
LG
Lenovo
MSI
Acer

and that's all I can think of off the top of my head...

So why is Netflix kicking their ass, then?

I don't think it is more wishful thinking than you making an assertion than Android will take over the tablet market. People have been predicting that iPods would be taken over... Didn't happen. Same with the demise of the iPhone.

We don't know what will happen in the future, but it is entirely possible. I will readily admit that I hope it happens, though.
