Owners of Toyota Cars in Rebellion Over Series of Accidents Caused by Sudden Acceleration

Anyone else been following this story? They had a pretty graphic show on nightline about it last night.

Refusing to accept the explanation of Toyota and the federal government, hundreds of Toyota owners are in rebellion after a series of accidents caused by what they call "runaway cars."

More PhotosSafety analysts found an estimated 2000 cases in which owners of Toyota cars including Camry, Prius and Lexus, reported that their cars surged without warning up to speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Toyota says the incidents are caused by floor mats becoming stuck under gas pedals, but owners say that's not what happened to them.

"I'm absolutely certain that in my situation, it was not the floor mats," Elizabeth James told ABC News. She was driving her Toyota Prius outside Denver, CO when she says it suddenly shot up to 90 miles an hour, even though her foot was on the brake and not the gas pedal.

"I kept going faster and faster," James said. "And all of a sudden… my foot was pressing on the brake super, super hard and I wasn't slowing down."

James and some other Toyota owners suspect the accidents have been caused by some kind of glitch in the electronic computer system used in Toyotas that controls the throttle.

Yeah, the timing of that whole thing was when Yuppies wanted to drive SUVs, but didn't bother to check the tires. The higher center of gravity, with an under inflated tire, was not going to end well.

Of course, now that TPMS are common, that tells these people they have an under inflated tire. My Wife's Nitro, gets just plain rude and obnoxious about it, when it detects a low tire.

So if it’s not an out of the box tube chassis rock crawler it could never have been meant for anything but paved roads?

The Explorer was designed as an SUV. Back in the ‘80’s, when it was designed, SUV meant off road capable which means a high center of gravity and loose suspension.
Now that people have willingly stripped away their own personal responsibility SUV means glorified minivan because they had to be dumbed down for people that bought them thinking they could drive them like a car.

That's nice and dandy, but Ford knew what they were doing. They weren't making the Explorer for the off-roaders.

I think it was more of a solution for the wife who wants a mini-van but a husband who won't resign himself to driving one.

Ford has had repeated problems with their f1 line, Exploders, and Pinto(Set the Wayback Machine) catching fire whilst standing still because of their use of cheap parts and bad designs.

Another reason was, there was something about this vehicle that exempted it from the CAFE standards. Because it was built on a light truck body and not a car body, it was classified differently and the fuel efficiency standards were lower. Does anyone remember the details of this?
