Need The Planet's Help/Stolen phone and Mayhem

Hi folks!

By way of bad luck and bad human intervention I had my 7 week old Note2 stolen from my office.

I had it password protected, but it was a simple code and the thief/thieves got it. The phone has been deactivated. However, it still makes emergency calls and the little ne'er do wells made a 911 call stating that an injured person was at that specific residence and that resulted in a gentleman getting his two front doors kicked in by police as he was coming home from work.

The call was fake but the damage doen was real and I had to talk to the KCK PD for a good while until it was straightened out. The worst part is they got my SD card full of thousands of photos and .gifs and 24 hours of music.

The interesting part of the story is this: On Saturday, I got an email notification that images had been uploaded to my dropbox account. Nothing that could be made out easily. But I remembered that they had to uploaded using wifi from somewhere. Hopefully a house.

Question 1: How do I get my carrier to dig into this and give me or the cops the IP address? Is that even possible?

On Sunday I received another notification that images had been uploaded. This time of a kid about 6 or 7 months old.

Question 2: If this kid has pictures on facebook or the web, can I use google reverse image search to find other images and possibly an identity?

How does it work? Just C&P the image into google?

Anything you can give me would be helpful.

Go here, drag and drop the image (from the web) into the search bar on this page, and if there is the same picture anywhere online that google can access, it will bring it up.

No luck there. I may have to wait for them to upload pics of themselves. They'll do it. It'll just take time.

You're better off posting this in the main lounge where everyone is.

too bad you missed my post last year about Android Lost.

Your carrier likely will do nothing, especially without a warrant. When my brother disappeared and it was feared he was going to harm himself (and he did) it required a court order from the Sheriff to get them to locate his phone, and that was with our employer authorizing it as it was a company phone.

Since the phone is apparently still connecting via WiFi you may be able to utilize Android Lost to retrieve it.

You're ****ed. Your carrier isn't going to give up any information without the request coming from the police. And the police aren't going to give you the time of day for a request like that.

A google image search might work, if the exact same pics are hosted somewhere public. But that's pretty unlikely. I don't believe it would work for tracking an image to a Facebook account.

Have you checked with Dropbox? Anyway that they can determine the IP from the pictures that are being uploaded to them?

There's android "find your post phone"apps type for this kinda thing. The main problem is that often the app needs to be on the device. You'll just have to find one that doesn't. Also, you're phone the phone companys (ie Samsung) website for ways to track lost devices. Also, like someone else said, you're probably better off posting this in the lounge.

Hope you find it!

It is possible that he could try to install something if the online play store still has access to it, but the person would see that something was installed.

no, they won't. Most of the software apps install invisibly. Many require direct access to the phone, but not all. Some can be installed remotely and invisibly.

Few things:

1. You'll want to get into your dropbox account to try to pull the IP addresses that have accessed your account. Until you can find those, there's not much you can do. you also might check in the gmail account that's associated with your phone. If you didn't change the credentials, the IP address might be there.

I don't know how far you'll get with just an IP address, but you never know. If you had anything funky running (like SSH listening because you rooted it and either didn't re-secure it or you set it up that way) then you might be able to log into the phone and control it remotely. I don't know much about the arsenel for attacking Androids remotely but since the carriers are slow to update you might get lucky.

No I won't help you pop your old phone.

2. Check to see what activity was performed. If you've got it set so that pics on your android go to Dropbox (or anywhere else for that matter) then pull down the natives and examine them with Exiftool. You'll get GPS coordinates.

Good luck.

Pop would mean, hack your own phone remotely.

Exiftool
