The Tigers have won Max Scherzer's last 13 overall home starts heading into Tuesday night's matchup with first place on the line.

Even better, the Royals haven't won a game that Scherzer has started since 2011

The surging Kansas City Royals shoot for another victory versus the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Kansas City made a run at the American League Central crown a season ago before coming up short. This year didn't begin great but it certainly has gone well as of late with eight wins in a row after outscoring the Tigers 11-8 in the series opener. Jason Vargas was at his best with only a pair of runs given up over seven frames before Donnie Joseph was charged with six runs in the 9th to make things far too interesting. The Royals pounded out 17 hits that saw Omar Infante homer and drive in four with Billy Butler cracking a three run double. Yordano Ventura makes one of his biggest starts of the season when he faces the dangerous Detroit attack on Tuesday. Ventura has gone 4-5 in 12 outings with a 3.20 ERA.

The Tigers have been gradually slowing and in the process their lead in the American League Central has been eroding. Detroit has been playing .500 ball the last few weeks with their pitching and hitting coming and going. The pitching of Justin Verlander was more of the latter as the former ace continued to struggle with with seven runs plated on 12 hits through six innings of work. The bats were quiet with a pair of runs in eight frames before exploding for six runs in the 9th which was still short. JD Martinez connected on a grand slam and Rajai Davis drove in a pair but all this did was make the game look competitive which it wasn't. Defending Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer is charged with slowing the red hot Kansas City bats.

If Scherzer is going to flash his Cy Young form now would be the time. What I see right now is a Tigers squad that better do something soon and rebound from an embarassing performance although I won't touch them...

Mark's Pick: Detroit -145
