2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

So... It would work out like this if KC includes a little more, as I suggested:

KC gets Derek Holland, sends 2B Christian Colon to Arizona, RHP Jason Adam to Cleveland, RHP Yordano Ventura to Arizona

Arizona gets RHP Yordano Ventura, 2B Christian Colon, SS Asdrubal Cabrera Sends Justin Upton to Texas

Texas gets OF Justin Upton, sends 3B Mike Olt to Cleveland, LHP Derek Holland to KC

Cleveland gets 3B Mike Olt, RHP Jason Adam, sends SS Asdrubal Cabrera to Arizona.

That deal makes MORE sense from Arizona's end, I think.

SMH-Why would Texas do this deal? So they lose a Solid Number 2 pitcher and a top 5 prospect and only get Upton back (who is coming off one of his worse season ever)

Because Justin Upton made his 2nd All-Star team before his 24th birthday and is 12 months removed from being a legitimate MVP candidate.

Because Justin Upton is still only 25 years old and is going to be making the same amount of money as Shane Victorino over the next 3 seasons.

You Orioles fans are cute. Get one good year in you and suddenly baseball began in 2012.

Justin Upton is one of the 5 most talented OFers in major league baseball and you'd be giving up a nice starting pitcher and a defensively limited prospect who's never shown a thing above AA and is all of one year younger than the 2-time All-star with over 100 career HRs and a top 5 MVP finish.

That's why the Rangers would do this deal.

It's not my idea, originally (it's someone else's, which was the same, except without top 75 prospect Yordano Ventura going to Arizona). I don't think you're placing enough value on Justin Upton, though. Mike Olt and Derek Holland straight-up for Justin Upton wouldn't make anyone bat an eye. And if Arizona was being smart, it would look at something like that.

Olt is a great prospect (though he's more top 20-30 rather than top 5), but the Rangers are committed to Beltre through 2016, blocking Olt.

Holland is good and controlled for a long time.

As for the Rangers' reasoning, it's clear they think Upton is better than you do.

All the reports i see don't have the Royals in this 4 way deal. Jon Heymen said KC early but has since backed off that.

Makes sense.

The Royals involvement didn't compute. Any team in the league would be willing to give up those 2 prospects for Holland. Even if the D-Backs are sold on the return of Cabrera + prospect for Upton, they could do better than Colon (or even Colon/Ventura).

Even if the first 3 legs of that stool are locked in, the 4th would still be extremely fluid. It makes sense that other teams would start to jockey to be the last team in the door.

Royals likely can't afford Anibal or Lohse unless they trade some salary. They have stayed in touch with both, though.

What is the Payroll of the Royals right now?

Schaum said something about the Arizona FO being big fans of Colon for a while. So maybe they value him a little more highly, who knows?

Also think the Royals can offer a lot more than even Colon, Ventura and Adam. Names like Jorge Bonifacio, Greg Holland, Aaron Crow, Kevlin Herrera could all be in play if the return for KC is Holland.

Holland fits all parameters KC wants - young, controlled, more upside, some proven big-league success.

No, Heyman hasn't wavered. It was Buster Olney, he's got KC/Texas/Arizona/Cleveland.

5:28 PM Yesterday - The Arizona Diamondbacks have constructed a four-team deal that's currently dormant. Would net them Asdrubal Cabrera, if it's revitalized.

11:27 AM Today - One of the teams involved in the four-team Ariz-Cle deal is the Kansas City Royals. Not sure about the form yet.

11:30 AM - As we reported late yesterday afternoon, Arizona is the middle of this four-team talk; they would be getting Asdrubal Cabrera for SS.
