Suggestions and an offer!

I am buying a new computer in a few weeks. I have a 4 1/2 year old computer now. I need some suggestions on what to get. I am going to try newegg.com to build one I think. Have a Gateway now. I am a DJ, so I am going to need a DVD and a CD burner. I also play games on the puter when I am bored with the Playstation 2. I also make fliers and playlists in a Spreadsheet program. I am going to burn DVD Vids I have downloaded and I have a lot of vids on VCR tapes that I am going to want to "digitize" on to DVD. I dont know what I am going to need for that. Someone suggested a video capture card, but I dont have a clue how they work. I also download a lot of MP3's from the Net. Ok that is a bout it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. I am also a HVAC Tech and Plumber. If anyone needs advice, or easy DIY tips on anything from heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, or ventilation, give me a shout! Nothing better than getting stuff fixed for free with a little advice and a walkthrough! I am just here to help!

Do you have skills to build your own? If you do go with NewEgg and Pricewatch. If you want it built for you, I recommend www.cyberpowerinc.com

The following are components you do not want to skimp on:

Power Supply
Motherboard
Memory

If you plan on doing some video editing or much mixing with your PC you'll want quite a bit of memory - 1 GB at least IMO. Memory makers have been putting a lot of bad product on the shelf in recent years. So look up some utilities like memtest86 and familiarize yourself with how they work. Odds are decent that you'll have to send your memory back. Look up reviews on all of the components you are considering. You can potentially make this cheaper by figuring out if there are parts you can cannibalize from your old PC.

One thing that was important to me for the last machine I built was to have a quiet PC. You'll have to look at the decibel output levels to know how quiet certain products really are. They can get away with labeling something "quiet" that's noisy as hell. I paid a premium for a quiet power supply and CPU cooling fan.

KC Jones,

What brands would you recommend for memory?

Ever toy with liquid cooling?

There is some amazing stuff on quieting the PC in the HTPC [home theater PC] forums.

Personally i'm a Corsair fan. Mushkin is also a highly rated brand. Alot of people recommend Kingston. I had a batch of Kingston go bad on me, but they had a very good RMA process, so I don't mind them either. I wouldn't go with OCZ (don't know if they are even around anymore).

I bought Kingston (recommended by a computer savvy friend) RAM for my old PC and also Kingston SD flash memory for my MP3 player. They worked out okay.

Newegg just sent me this offer. Corsair 512MB DDR2 for $95.

Yeah, I don't think that would work in my PC. I'll have to check when I get home but, I'm pretty sure that's not the right ram for mine.
