If not #1, where?

The draftniks keep saying that Geno Smith isn't worth the #1 pick.
None of them say he isn't the top QB in the class though.
If we don't take him at #1 how far is he realistically going to fall?

I see no scenario where he falls out of the Top 10.

So if he's the top QB in a weak class...
QB is our biggest need...
And he's gonna go Top 10 anyway...

Why not at #1?

Am I wrong to say he won't fall out of the Top 10?

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Here's the current 2013 NFL Draft order (via CBSSports.com)

1. Kansas City Chiefs (2-14)

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-14)

3. Oakland Raiders (4-12)

4. Philadelphia Eagles (4-12)

5. Detroit Lions (4-12)

6. Cleveland Browns (5-11)

7. Arizona Cardinals (5-11)

8. Buffalo Bills (6-10)

9. New York Jets (6-10)

10. Tennessee Titans (6-10)

11. San Diego Chargers (7-9)

12. Miami Dolphins (7-9)

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9)

14. Carolina Panthers (7-9)

15. New Orleans Saints (7-9)

16. St. Louis Rams (7-8-1)

17. Pittsburgh Steelers (8-8)

18. Dallas Cowboys (8-7)

19. New York Giants (9-7)

20. Chicago Bears (10-6)

21. Cincinnati Bengals (10-6)

22. St. Louis Rams (via Washington Redskins) (10-6)

23. Minnesota Vikings (10-6)

24. Indianapolis Colts (11-5)

25. Seattle Seahawks (11-5)

26. Green Bay Packers (11-5)

27. Houston Texans (12-4)

28. Denver Broncos (13-3)

I left off the 4 teams still in the hunt for the SB. With a couple exceptions (Detroit and maybe the Browns), which of the other 9 in the top 10 need a QB? Answer- all of them. So let's put that silly notion about grabbing Smith or someone else at #7 or so to bed.

Just to play devil's advocate and use an argument I've seen approximately a thousand times about various QBs around draft time, I like Bridgewater as much as the next guy, and the Florida bowl game was impressive, but his stats are fattened by a schedule stocked with powerhouses like Kentucky, Missouri State, UNC, FIU, Southern Miss, Pitt, South Florida, Cincinnati, Temple, Syracuse, UConn and Rutgers.

And even if he's god's gift to QBs and the preseason favorite for the #1 pick in 2014, the team could fall apart, he could get hurt, or he could be great, the chiefs win 8 games and have no chance at him, or any other top QB.

They can't make a decision based on what they might be able to do in 2014. Not with the number 1 pick now.

That's a murderers row compared to the teams David Fales played against this year.

I'm not much of a believer in the "Quarterback is defined by strength of schedule" notion. I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure guys like Big Ben and Drew Brees didn't face "badass" SEC defenses week after week either, lol.

And those negatives that you've foreshadowed could possibly happen, I agree. But that's unlikely. If I didn't say this before, I'll say it now: I watched all of their games this year and the chances of the team falling apart is unlikely. If I'm not mistaken, they only lose 1 starter on defense. And only 1 from the starting WR corp. They lose only 2 on their O-line, but they have the depth to fill that void. On top of that they have a very good class coming in, that will add depth to an already deep receiving corp, as well as the linebacking unit. Not to mention straight studs they redshirted this year.

Long story short, the notion of them falling apart is unlikely. Injury, however, is probable for any player in CFB. So, who knows.

And now I will reiterate: Geno is not a bad pick. The top 2 QB prospects in this Draft are him, and Tyler Wilson. What I'm saying is, I wouldn't be surprised if Reid took another route, to use the pick on the O-Line, and then draft a QB later, so that he can at least see what Cassel can do in his system. To be fair, Dysert and Nassib are outright studs, with Dysert being one of the more underrated QBs this year (Along with Colby Cameron) and could wind up being a steal.

But again, Geno would not be much of a reach when you consider how he could fit into Reid's system.

Chiefs tamp down expectations for this year’s first overall draft pick

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 18, 2013, 1:16 PM EST
NBC Sports

New Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey has a big decision ahead of him with the first overall pick in the NFL draft. But he wants Chiefs fans to understand that this year’s draft is not like last year’s draft.

Dorsey said on 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City that the 2012 draft, with Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III at the top and a lot of talent beyond those two, was the kind of draft that doesn’t come along every year. Or even every decade.

“That’s one of those drafts that come along every two decades, maybe every three decades, when you have that many impact players,” Dorsey said.

So what about this year? Dorsey says that just because the Chiefs would like to find a franchise quarterback, that doesn’t mean they’re going to draft a quarterback first overall if they don’t determine that there’s a quarterback worthy of going first overall.

“I will never attempt to reach or jump on a player just for need’s sake,” Dorsey said. “We’re not going to do that here.”

Asked if it’s still possible that the Chiefs will stick with Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback in 2013, Dorsey said, “Well, you never say never.”

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement of Cassel. But it also may turn out that Cassel is the best option the Chiefs have.

Okay...

And even with that list I still have players I didn't include, guys like G.Gilbert, C.Pachall, K.Price, and even B.Miller as a wild card (Hell even J.Manziel, though i'm not fully sold on the fact that he'll be able to make the transition)

With that said, Bridgewater would undoubtedly go first overall if he were to declare this year (TrueSoph btw)
I'd put Fales just a bit behind him, but he too, would probably get picked #1 this year.
Brett Smith is good enough to have been able to challenge Geno for the #1 QB spot this year.

Outside of Bridgewater that list is so ****ing hilarious.

Aaron Murray and AJ McCarron went back to school because they got told they'd probably be drafts AFTER Bray and Glennon.

You must have watched a good portion of their games for you formulate that strong of an opinion (= , cause otherwise there's no way that ignorant of a remark would have been made, lol.

In regards to Murray and McCarron....What??? It was a No-Brainer that McCarron would be returning. The kid needed another year, simple and plain. And I'd like you to point out the genius that said Bray would go before Murray.

Bray got a 2nd round grade and Murray got a 2-3rd round grade...

I would easily take Bridgewater over anyone in this class. That guy is going to be really good.

Yea? And Akili somehow went before Daunte Culpepper. The thing isn't much that separates Bray and Murray this year. And if Murray came out this year, there's no doubt he would go before Bray, because of Bray's immaturity issues, and Murray's 'leadership'.

Anyway the point I was trying to make (and was apparently missed buy that maqe fellow) was that Murray will most likely be a better prospect next year, than Bray is this year. I didn't think that was so complicated to understand...
