No. I probably use less gasoline than 99% of the population. Well, maybe 90%

I think if you mull that over for awhile you will see that this is not only likely, but in todays economic world it's almost inevitable. I believe it would be difficult to have a true shortage of anything today unless it somehow caught us by complete surprise such as a natural disaster drastically changing a commodity market. Speculation will always get their first if there are any real indicators to lead off of, and in this case there were tons and tons.
So, you agree that we've not reached peak oil?

No. I'm trying to explain that we have price increases ahead of supply shortage so it serves to keep demand down and this in turn means that we don't have real shortage situations. Production has flat lined so where we are taking the hit right now is in our normal growth of demand, so instead of growth we're maintaining.

It's important to realize that this is not business as usual though. Just because speculation is driving costs up ahead of supply shortage does not mean that supplies are not in a decline. In fact, Id say it pretty much has to happen this way since the supply shortage is largely predictable so speculation is hardly surprising.

Why has production "flatlined"? It certainly can't be from lack of funds.

well that depends on who you ask. In my opinion it's because we're at or very near peak global oil production, which means we start seeing production declines on a yearly basis from here on out and constant price increases to match.

Other people think that Opec just decided that we had enough and doesn't want to increase production anymore despite some of them claiming that they could if they wanted. This would be the opposite of how they have always behaved so is hard to believe.

With the new supplies coming online (~600,000 bpd), I simply don't see it.

In the grand scheme of things (88,000,000 bpd currently is world production) it's not that much and they've been working on getting that online for 2 years. This is significantly slower than it needs to be in order to maintain business as usual.

Yes well, there is no other choice. Wanting to not reduce consumption isn't going to cause you to not have to.
