I could possibly seeing the 49ers releasing Smith as a favor to him for being a professional in the Kaepernick deal if they win a Super Bowl. I wouldn't, though...since he's a valuable trading chip IMO.

Cassel wasn't worth a squirt, but Alex Smith is more or less proven as a starter in the league. He's worth at least what Cassel was. They should get a second round pick for him normally.

That's why he'd be so much more of a steal if we could get him for free.

That was different. No one from the 49ers organization just took over another NFL team.

Smith asked for his release. The 49ers have to pay a $1 million dollar roster bonus on like the third or fourth "league day". I'm willing to bet that teams will play chicken before giving up anything higher than a late third rounder.
