Unfortunately, its not misplaced. They operate in code/symbols...have for 100's of years. People are ignorant to their meaning by design...and take them at face value. They are only meant to be recognized by initiates. It why they incorporate obscure handshakes and gestures. The number 13 is very important. It's used to relay the message "we are in control", "we are here" or "we control this".

I would venture guess you know very little about the groups you mentioned...maybe in name only.
