Vikes fan has rental car burned at MetLife

Moral of the story-always get the insurance..

Tailgaters at Jets game set Vikings fan's car on fire with grill

Vikings fans had a tough time in Philadelphia last season, but did any of them have their rental car burned to a crisp by a grill in the stadium parking lot?
By Michael Rand OCTOBER 22, 2018 — 10:36AM

Welcome to the Monday edition of The Cooler, where we should all pause mid-morning for a precautionary rest. Let’s get to it:

Much was made nine months ago about the awful treatment Vikings fans endured from Eagles fans during the 38-7 NFC title game loss in Philadelphia.

To the best of my knowledge, though, not a single Vikings fan had his or her car burned to a crisp in the Lincoln Financial Field parking lot.

That treatment was saved for Sunday’s game at the New York Jets and especially unlucky Vikings fan Gina Smith.

Smith was on a trip to Boston to celebrate her birthday and decided it would be fun to make a day trip to New York for the Vikings/Jets game since the schedule lined up nicely. She said her group bought a parking pass at a MetLife Stadium lot and went into the game — a sometimes dull but enjoyable 37-17 win for the Vikings, at least from the perspective of a Minnesota fan.

“It wasn’t until the game was over and we went to go find a car where we were like, ‘Hey where’s our car? It should have been right where this burned out junker is … oh,'” Smith said. “No one gave us any information, but there was someone’s grill right on our car, so we could tell what happened.”

Smith said she is inclined to believe it was a terribly stupid but careless accident and nothing intentionally malicious given that it was a rental car — no Minnesota plates, no discernible markings of rooting interest. It was a typically windy day (just ask Vikings kicker Dan Bailey about that), so the notion that someone didn’t put out a fire completely and that it spread to their car is very plausible.

“I would like to think that it was just people being stupid and careless,” Smith said. “Being so windy out, I think it was extremely careless to just leave hot coals out there like that. Definitely not the way I wanted to celebrate a Vikings win.”

That said, um, it is not standard tailgating procedure in my experience to set up a grill on top of a car — let alone someone else’s car — where such a thing might happen.

With her rental car burned beyond recognition, Smith’s bad day was just beginning. The rental company suggested she and her group take a taxi home instead of getting a new car, which wasn’t exactly possible given they were coming from four hours away in Boston. Police arrived and made a report but, according to Smith, said the incident is beyond their jurisdiction because it happened on MetLife Stadium property — but they also told her the stadium isn’t liable for things that happen on their property.

The only kind soul: A parking lot attendant took pity on Smith and her crew and gave them a ride to the Newark Airport to get a new rental car.

The kicker: Smith didn’t purchase additional insurance through her rental car company, so she’s currently battling with MetLife Stadium folks to cover the cost of the deductible through her insurance.

“Honestly, when getting our rental car the thought that we should get the extra insurance because Jets fans might burn our car to the ground never crossed my mind,” Smith said.

Nor should it. That kind of thing doesn’t even happen in Philadelphia.

This is the part that intrigues me the most. Is that parking lot a lawless area? Can I commit other crimes there without fear of enforcement? Because if that's the case, I'm going to send free tickets to a couple of people on my list and will plan to run into them on game day. In my car. Several times.

Ironic that you say that. Usually, no. Thursday night one of our tv's died. No video, Just sound. 1 year and 3 months old.

Samsung is going to pay for the parts. I have to pay for labor. 180.00
Not ready to dish out more for a new tv.

This sort of reminds me of when my friend had the windshield of his car destroyed by a golf ball while driving past a private club a few years ago. Because the ball was hit over a high overgrown fence, he couldn't tell who hit it. When he went to the club to complain, they basically told him to **** off, and that they had no liability or any duty to assist him in identifying the culprit.

It's almost like rich golf-playing pricks write the laws or something.

I lost my car keys at the Playoff game at arrowhead two years ago -- that night of the Steelers 6 field goals game.

called AAA because I needed to get my car towed to my house and a locksmith the next day to make a new key (2003 Nissan Xterra). They said,

"We aren't allowed in the Arrowhead Lot. There is a towing company contracted to that property and we are not allowed to go on the property. But they mostly only do battery charges and jump starts."

I begged the guy enough and he waited until traffic out of the stadium was gone and then got me.

That was a long AF night. Sedated was with me. I think he walked out of the lot and hitchhiked home.

Now you know better. You just burn your car, kill someone else, and take theirs. The police have no jurisdiction in this savage land of the parking lot. It's anarchy once you pass that guy in the vest waving you in.
