Dolphins also talking to Gholston

We may have a chance at Jake Long yet!

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/...gholston-too/#

As expected, the Miami Dolphins are talking to the agents for multiple players regarding the No. 1 overall selection in the draft

On Wednesday, it was reported by the Miami Herald that the Fins are talking with Tom Condon of CAA regarding Michigan tackle Jake Long. Now, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the team is talking to another CAA agent (presumably Ben Dogra) regarding Ohio State linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston.

Other players who might be approached by the Dolphins include Virginia defensive end Chris Long, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, and Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan.

As we’ve previously explained, the team’s apparent objective is to play one player against the other, in the hopes of doing the best possible deal. And every player who has a chance at being the No. 1 overall pick must when assessing the offer attempt to predict where he’ll go if he’s not the top pick — and whether he’ll be paid as much or more at a lower slot than what the Dolphins are offering.

For players represented by the same agent (like Jake Long and Ryan) or the same firm (like Jake Long, Ryan, and Gholston), there’s a potential conflict of interest, which the NFLPA’s agent regulations have yet to address.

For every agent who fears being hammered in the industry for doing a “bad deal” at No. 1, there’s an even bigger conflict of interest, which the NFLPA’s regs likewise don’t address. Because while it might be in the player’s best interests to take what he can get and be the first overall pick, it’s clearly not in the interests of the agent to be associated with a deal that doesn’t reflect a significant increase in the total package and guaranteed money paid last year to Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

I heard that they were going to be working with a few different players to come up with a deal.

It does seem pretty ridiculous that the same agent could be negotiating against himself in this situation. That shouldn't be allowed.
The aspect I do like about this though is that it removes the players' monopoly on demanding how much money he wants before even setting foot on the field (although it is only for this single pick). In theory, though, if the Dolphins get these guys to bid against each other, then the number one pick shouldn't get out of control money, and that may help the teams that draft the subsequent picks. But the market seems sort of rigged if the same agent or agency can be involved in negotiations for the same draft pick and different players.

Bill Parcells historically drafts LB, DE & DB in the first round. Miami's offense is as bad as their defense - i/m/o he'll grab the best defensive player or trade up for that player. Parcells selected Drew Bledsoe with the # 1 pick. My guess -- he had a decent defense at the time or he had the players to plug in the line.

Miami will run a 3-4 base defense this season along with three other AFC East teams. Parcells will be looking for LB's, and this year's draft is deep with offensive tackles. He'll probably take one in the second round. Parcell's will also need a strong NT. Bill's all about defense and he'll build his team around his pupil, Bill Belichick.

I like the 4-3 defense. The 4-3 has a bigger edge over a 3-4. One huge disadvantage of a 3-4 def is finding a strong NT. Very hard to do. Besides, there are very few pure NT's around. Some teams look for a bigger DT player to develop. And that takes on average three years. Another disadvantage -- Many NT's run out of steam in the 4th quarter. The front seven in the 3-4 are bigger then the players in a 4-3. But if the 3-4 LBs can't get to the QB and apply pressure, the WR's are off and running. Did you notice how much bigger the Patriots defensive line was compared to the Giants line? A lot of good that did them. They all got busted in the mouth anyway. Thank God...

i hope it all makes sense. i did not have time to read it -- i gotta go to bed and get up in a few... i hope i'm in the right thread

It is my understanding that it is the same firm, BUT not the same agent working for Long and Ghoston.

If he's there, my money is on the Pats taking Ghoulston at 7. Very much doubt he'll be there, though, especially with the Jets at 6.

i imagine the dolphins are talking with several players.

Jake long
Chris Long
Gholston
Dorsey

maybe even Matt Ryan

Use the extra leverage to get a better deal with the guy they ultimately want.

it's just smart

Exactly. They are all rated pretty much the same, so the Phins will go with whoever they can get the best deal with.

i don't know about that

unless 1 player will take a significantly lesser deal then the dolphins will probably still sign/select the guy they have rated the highest.

but they will certainly use the lack of a clear #1 to pressure the guy they do want into a better deal.
