Why Geno Smith fell in the draft

I've seen a couple other posts about this... but this probably deserves it's own thread considering how many hours we've wasted arguing about the guy. This is the first article I've seen theorizing why Geno fell in the draft. Time will tell whether it's accurate.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl--ge...183846651.html

Quote:
On April 23, Smith, his agents, some family members and several friends gathered for dinner in New York in advance of the draft, a gathering confirmed by a family member. At one point, everyone around the table stood to give a toast to celebrate the evening.

Smith went last, thanking everyone and declaring that entire group – his agents included – were a "family" that would stay together his entire career, if not the rest of his life, the sources said. Smith, who at one point was expecting to be the No. 1 overall pick and at least a top 10 selection, has big plans for his career. Smith, according to the sources, hopes to emulate players such as Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, putting himself cut above the rest of the quarterback fray.

The problem is that NFL types see a guy who, right now, doesn't understand how to get there.

"His biggest problem is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know," said a league executive, who spent extensive time assessing Smith before the draft.

"I'm not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn't listen or talk to our coaches … he's talented. He can sling it, he can fit it into tight spots, he can do a lot of things and I think he wants to be good. But you can't tell him anything right now. He's tuned out because he thinks he's got it all down."

---

One possible factor in Smith dropping to the second round is a concern about leadership.

"He doesn't have much presence, not much of a leader," said another league executive, who spent a great deal of time studying Smith before the draft. "I don't think he's a bad person, but that's not enough to be a quarterback in this league."

Two sources indicated that when Smith went on some visits to teams, rather than interact with coaches and front-office people, he would spend much of his time on his cell phone. Instead of being engaged with team officials, he would be texting friends or reading Twitter or a number of other distracting activities.

"All these other players who were in there were talking to the coaches, trying to get to know people and he was over there by himself," one of the sources said. "That's not what you want out of your quarterback."

Both sources indicated that Florida State's E.J. Manuel, who was selected ahead of Smith at No. 16 overall by Buffalo, was far more impressive in terms of his personality and maturity.

"Manuel gets it, he gets the whole big picture of what it takes to lead a team," one of the league executives said.

---

By Sunday, Smith was being convinced by other friends that it was the fault of his agents that he slipped so much in the draft, according to one of the sources.

"Right now, he's blaming everybody but himself and he has some buddies around him who are telling him that same thing," the source said.

Just looked at the Trent Green/Drew Brees breakdown from 2002-2005. Which was Green's top play and when Brees played in San Diego. Brees only played one game in 2001 and Green didn't have the best year either.

I uploaded Green's stats in Kansas City and Bree's stats in San Diego.

2002-2005 Per Game Averages for Green
20/32
.625
1.4 TDS per game
.84 INTS per game
38-26 record
9.5-6.5

2002-2005 per Game Averages for Brees
19/30
.633
1.36 TDS per game
.91 INTS per game
30-28 record
8.2-7.8

Just some food for thought.

I realize that this is difficult for someone of your intelligence level to understand.

I wanted us to draft Geno. That was an opinion. I thought that he offered the best upside for our franchise of any player in the draft. I had an avatar of him throughout this entire ordeal. However, we didn't draft him. Neither did 31 other teams who had a chance to do so, with many of those teams having more than one chance to do so.

I'm not stubborn enough to just brush that off and think that there's some kind of conspiracy against the kid or that I know something from watching him throw the football on the TV a few times that these guys who have broken down every singe snap of his, held him for private workouts, interviewed him and those close to him, and done exhaustive research don't know.

That would be dumb. You're being dumb, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever read any of your posts, under any of your ridiculous monikers.

Also, I will not be cheering for him, even though I wanted to draft him. He plays for another team. I have no allegiance to the Jets, and don't care to root for their QB. I hope he fails miserably, just as I hope that 31 other QBs in the NFL fail miserably.

And his pouting certainly falls right in line with why many were questioning his leadership and if he should be a first round QB. I thought it wasn't important. I was pretty turned off by his pouting during the draft coverage and then his finger pointing immediately after. Those are things that we fans don't generally get to see as many of those things happen behind closed doors, which is probably why many GMs weren't interested in drafting him.

And by the way, I probably will go back to my "hidey-hole." As I've told several posters who have PMd me asking why I don't get involved in the football discussions much anymore, it's because of idiots like you who post the same drivel in every thread. This place is infested with idiots, and those idiots, like yourself, lack basic common sense and intelligence. It is impossible to read through the same idiotic posts in every single thread. And it certainly isn't worth trying to post a sensible thought in that thread.

The fact we had a chance to do so with the 1.1 pick and pick the best QB prospect would have made me get that hope and feeling like **** yeah now we can start building a team for the future and championships.

Nothing is going to change my mind that it is best to pick a QB from the draft than going after retreads like the Chiefs continue to do years after years.

I'm all ready disappointed we traded two 2s for Aids Smith. They took the hope away before the draft.
I'm tired of it too. Again, I was in the Geno camp and don't like the Alex Smith trade. I also don't think that a GM/Coach should be required to take a QB even if you don't believe in him or you don't think he fits your system. Especially in probably the worst QB class in recent memory.

If the Jets passed on Geno, who knows how low he would have fallen. There's too much smoke on this not to be true. In the end, we took a guy in Tyler Bray who has a lot more talent, but seems to have the same mental issues as Geno (obviously, a lot moreso than Geno).
