Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Haven't seen the first one. Is it worth checking out? I mean, if you're someone who usually doesn't watch a lot of films in that genre?

I liked it. Scary more in a Rosemary's Baby kind of way than a slasher kind of scary.

It's a slow build. Lots of silence and still shots that build tension. It's very different. I loved it.

It's one movie I think I'd rather see at home in the dark, than at a theater.

Loved 7/8s of the movie, but it dipped for 10 minutes, 20 minutes before credits. That 1/8th really dipped. It made me constantly think it's finishing weak after a VERY STRONG beginning and middle.

The kid summarizes the dip a little bit when he says "I know what you're thinking...kid comes and learns all and leaves cured". I can't decide if them knowing that weakness made up for the lameness I felt during that dip.

Under Pressure has a new context for me.

The subject matter was dealt with perfectly. In fact, that may be the strongest point of the whole movie. It was perfect. I enjoyed every time we went into his mind, especially the cities. Though, I wish he would have drawn other things.

The supporting characters really helped the movie soar. I do think the Dr. could have had some more time. Jeremy Davies was awesome considering there were plenty of times he blurred the line between patient and worker.

Zack Galifinakis was, unsurprisingly, really good. I don't think many people realize his range. And the movie - perhaps intentionally, perhaps unintentionally - really made me think the ending was going to be different.

I wanted the movie to be longer. It definitely could have if you start to build his creative side a little stronger and more diverse. More scene time with his crush and the hospital girl would have given the culmination a tad more umph, but that's a minor quibble.

In sum, I liked it a lot but I'm not sure I LOVED it. I did, however, love how they handled the subject matter.
Nice.

I don't know that I wholey disagree with any of your points. I might be giving my emotional response to the film more weight in the film's final grade than you are. Which is typical of me.

But, yes, solid points. I'm not sure I felt the dip that you did at the end. Though, the end wasn't as strong as the beginning.

The "Under Pressure" scene was one of my favorite scenes from any film I've seen in a long, long time. I actually got fairly choked up during.

What ending were you expecting?

Spoiler!

Funny thing is, I still find myself thinking about the movie a lot. The way it handled the subject matter was just superb and I keep thinking about that aspect.

Oh and I meant to say that I didn't wholey agree with ALL of your points, not "any" of them. I actually like most of your points, and completely agree about the film's handling of subject matter.

I haven't seen a good many of those. But on my own personal list, I'd have Inception much higher. Probably above The Social Network, honestly. And I loved The Kids Are All Right... but I'd probably put Inception above that one too.

Man, I am soooo pumped for Black Swan, I can't even tell you!
