The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

The 49ers are talking to teams about a trade for Alex Smith but currently do not have a deal in place, league sources said Sunday and Monday. The 49ers can discuss trading Smith, who had a 104.1 passer rating before suffering a season-altering concussion Nov. 11, but no trade can be finalized until the league year begins March 12.

For the last month, reports have consistently linked Smith to the Chiefs, who have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and had one of the worst quarterback situations in the league last season. The 49ers undoubtedly have talked about moving Smith to the Chiefs -- and the Chiefs currently may be the top suitor -- but San Francisco will continue to entertain offers until March 12 and perhaps beyond. If the 49ers don't trade or release Smith by April 1, they will owe him $8.5 million.

On Friday, Jim Harbaugh said the top two options were holding onto Smith or trading him. He said it's "unlikely" the 49ers would release the quarterback and insisted the 49ers have plenty of salary-cap space to fit Smith and the other pending free agents, such as safety Dashon Goldson, they are trying to re-sign.

Smith wants to start in 2013, an unlikely scenario as long as he is on the 49ers, who committed to Colin Kaepernick in late November. The 49ers are sensitive to accommodating Smith, who is largely respected and admired in the 49ers locker room, but their top priority is getting a good deal in return for the quarterback, who in 2005 was drafted No. 1 overall.

I was the first to mention Buffalo yesterday and I still think it's plausible.

Unfortunately, I'm conditioned to expect the worst for the Chiefs.

DraftCountdown I can see it now, the #Chiefs trade for Alex Smith then win just enough games to take them out of range for a top QB in the 2014 NFL Draft.

You can see it now only because it's happened about 8 other times. Rinse and repeat.

Ive backed down from the ledge. If scott ****ing pioli can take berry im sure dorsey and reid can do the right thing.

Besides, its all going to plan so far. We all expected Geno to kill it at the combine and he did. We all know hes a smart well spoken kid and so hes likely killed the interviews too. Just wait, Albert and Bowe will be signed soon and Genos chocho penii will decend from the heavens because it was written.

Maybe months and months of hope for a certain player have made me biased, but i still cannot bring myself to give up hope just yet.

Also let me add that trading for Smith does not mean we will not take Geno. Ive seen a lot of wellll they dont want to pay matt so they wont trade for Smith and still draft Geno. Bullshit. They are not connected. Matt Casehole has been evaluated for about two seconds and been seen as the no place in this league pile of shit he is. Thats why he will be cut and thats why it has nothing to do with alex smith. As much as i dont want Alex, the situations arnt remotely linked.

See the light people. Geno will be a chief.

Only two teams benefit from this "leak". One is San Fran if they are trying to flush out other teams to increase the value they get for Smith. The second is KC if Reid really likes Foles and he is hoping that this rumor gets Chip Kelly to think about dealing Foles before it is too late.

Here is Walterfootball.com's reply to that tweet.

@DraftCountdown Totally agree, trading for Alex Smith could have terrible long-term ramifications for #Chiefs
