DJ: “I told Gun, ‘Let me just go.’ ”

Long analysis: I'm not entirely sure what is meant by DJ having "autonomy". Doing whatever he wants? Freelancing? But given the game DJ had (and Williams too), this seems promising if it was a clear change in how the defense and/or LBs were told to play.

Short version: Why hasn't Gun been letting DJ go all along? Gun is a friggin' reerun.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chi...ry/818234.html

More at the link, but the relevant portion:

Quote:
Johnson called a meeting this last week with defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. It was a quiet conversation like this one, and Johnson told Cunningham he wasn’t happy with how he’d been playing. He knew he was drafted in the first round more than three years ago to be a playmaker, and he hadn’t yet hit his potential. Johnson asked for autonomy. Cunningham obliged.

“Good player, everybody knows I’m athletic,” Johnson said. “I haven’t been showing it the last three games. I’ll even say it. I’m not playing bad, but it’s just, ‘Where’s DJ?’

“I told Gun, ‘Let me just go.’ ”

And away Johnson went.

The thing that impressed me most about this was DJ owning up to his relative "failure" and trying to get better. That shows just how much he cares. He's not just showing up to work and getting the hell out of there like some players - WIEGMANN YOU BITCH.

It honestly depends on the coach, Gregg Williams hates freelance players, he would essentially never play a pro bowl talent if he wasn't an "assignment" guy and was better at freelancing.

It more or less depends on what the system is setup for.

The other great LB development was that Williams was apparently talking shit to Cutler all game long, and it frustrated him so much that Cutler shoved him down late in the 4th. Cutler seems easily rattled. Philip Rivers had it right, who knew?

Yep, allow him to freelance the way that the Chargers utilized Junior Seau in his prime.

I hope it works out but we gave up nearly 500 yards at home. I would love to see DJ dominate opposing teams but our defense is ranked 29th in total defense right now.

I saw that. Williams needs to work on his flop.

That was the game plan, no? Instead of letting Cutler have the big play, make them execute long drives to get points.

The dungver offense had scored 41, 39 and 34 points in their three games prior to yesterday. I would say that holding that offense to 19 points is a success.
