Do Target workers deserve a shortened Black Friday?

Worthless retail slobs.

Um maybe because these positions don't require the education or training to perform them than the others.

Again, because you work at the facility I think it would be somewhat more expected. Just like the janitorial staff, kitchen and cafeteria, and housekeeping at a hospital might not be saving someone's life but they have to be there to clean up some kid's vomit, feed visitors coming to the hospital, and wash linens and towels. There is an inherent expectation that services provided at the hospital are 24/7/365 and working at the facility you accept that premise.

I think retail is no way equivalent. Unless it's a pharmacy which is now open 24/7/365. I often marvel at how lucky parents are now that they are. I remember many a sleepless night with sick toddlers whose prescriptions could not be filled until morning. And also having to make sure our cabinet was stocked with every conceivable medication in the event one got sick in the middle of the night.

Right, but if we are placing a moral and ethical equivalency on them...Saying their presence is as needed and valued as someone with a doctorate or life saving skills.

That's what I was wondering. I think it's idiotic that stores are going to open on Thanksgiving for "Black Friday." However, I don't feel that sorry for the people working there - that's just how it goes.

because all of those professions listed have great jobs...where most Target employees work for minimum wage...

being a police officer, that just comes with the position, and they probably live great lives...

I'd say the Target employee has it a little rougher...

that said, who gives a shit...I'm not a holiday kind of person, I'll work every and all holidays and enjoy the extra pay...I can usually sneak out and still spend a little time with my family anyways.

Most retail workers DO NOT get extra pay for holidays.

I was talking about myself working holidays and getting holiday pay.

As for retail workers, yes I agree...I feel sorry for them, but hey, at least they have a job.

Things could be worse.

For the record, I'm working on Black Friday (non-retail) by choice. But if either of my jobs required me to work on Thanksgiving, especially with little previous notice, I'd quit.

Christmas and Easter are not important to me. Birthdays are not that important. Screw Mother's Day and other Hallmark holidays. New Years and the Fourth of July can both take a hike...

there is ONE day that means a shit ton to my family and that is Thanksgiving. We aren't religious people nor are we conspicuous consumers. We are simply people who appreciate the opportunity to take ONE HOLIDAY that means something by it's simplicity and it's gratitude to spend time with each other watching football, eating great food, and being thankful for the many, many blessings we have. Sure, I like to encourage that behavior every day but to have one day where we do it as a family, community, country is truly special.

It's really very sad our country has lost this and what is worse is that, as the generations age, the expectation of it from younger generations will be gone some day as well.

Same thing.

BUT

In my experience with those types of jobs, before you're ever even hired they make you quite aware that you are guaranteed to work most holidays...

Shit, when I was 16 the movie theater made us work 2 out of 3 Christmas/Thanksgiving/New Years...

So honestly, they were aware of Holiday work before ever signing that dotted line.

So yes, I feel sorry for them they can't spend time with their families over the holidays but I do not feel sorry about them having jobs in this economy...especially when many grocery store workers don't have any prior work experience, or have misdemeanors, or have felonies...at least they get a paycheck.

(and I'm sorry if that was a stereotype I'm not trying to be an asshole just realistic)
