Royals interested in Baldwin

As long as he's cheap, this signing is alright. I think he'd basically be like Suppan. I think he's a fly ball pitcher who would give up his share of homers, but would eat up some innings. I would just really like a signing I could get more excited about.

Royals interested in Baldwin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In an effort to add some experience to their pitching staff, the Royals have an eye on former Seattle right-hander James Baldwin.

General manager Allard Baird said the club was working Wednesday on trying to sign Baldwin as a non-roster invitee. Baldwin went 7-10 while starting 23 games with the Mariners last year. He had a 5.28 earned run average in 150 innings and opponents batted .298 against him.

"He has a very good makeup and we'd like to add a guy like that," Baird said. "We could know something on that in the next 24 hours."

Baldwin fanned 88 and walked 49 last season. The Mariners did not pick up the option on his contract.

Baird said the Royals would also like to add another veteran for their bullpen before pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Feb. 14 in Surprise, Ariz.

And there you have it...

Hey, at least he's cheap!

Baldwin agrees to minor league deal with Royals

January 23, 2003
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Right-hander James Baldwin agreed Thursday to a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals and was invited to spring training as a non-roster player.

Baldwin, who went 7-10 with 5.28 ERA in 23 starts with the Seattle Mariners last season, would get a $575,000, one-year contract if he's added to the major league roster and the chance to earn $675,000 more in performance bonuses.

His best major league season came in 2000 with the White Sox. He opened the season 7-0 and finished with a 14-7 record and a 4.65 ERA in 28 starts. He was the winning pitcher at that year's All-Star game.

Baldwin had rotator cuff surgery after that season.

General manager Allard Baird said the Royals hope to add another veteran to their bullpen before pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Feb. 14 at their new training camp in Surprise, Ariz.

damn... I used to get excited about the royals, but it's obvious that the current 'regime' is about as intelligent as the bungles are to football
