It's easy to forget that this was his first start in a truly hostile environment. It's also easy to forget that he's undefeated on the road in is career.

Obviously he has to play way better, but it's tough to dock a guy for lack of style points after we just won at South Carolina.

Mauk still has a long ways to go to reach his potential, but I think people forget that he has made just 9 starts as a collegian. Hopefully, as he starts getting into his 13th+ start, we start seeing the same effect Missouri usually gets with its QBs (everyone being more effective in year 2 as a starter than year 1).

Saturday was equally frustrating, encouraging and astounding.

It was frustrating to watch the offense struggle so mightily for such a long period of time.

It was encouraging to see how well the defense played, even when Golden had to go to the bench in the second half.

And it was astounding they turned that into a win considering where they were sitting and what the offense had looked like until that moment.

As for the rest of the offense... boy, they really need to get Morgan Steward healthy OR just start trusting Ish Witter more, because Mizzou could really use Murphy's playmaking ability out of the slot as they worked on in preseason camp.

Just thin on playmakers who are ready out there. Hopefully, White and Hunt are recovered enough to get into the game against Georgia. I was encouraged by Nate Brown (who seems to gain separation any time he's out there) and Sean Culkin's play (also getting open a lot), but adding a dynamic make-you-miss guy like Murphy as a factor in the slot could help out quite a bit out there.

There's plenty of reasons to be optimistic. There's also plenty to be pessimistic. Nearly halfway through the season, I still have no idea what we've got.

Not a lot of noise on recruiting in a while. Biggest news of late is that Imatorbebhe decommitted. TBH, I don't see it as much of a loss. Looking as his stats, he doesn't seem to be much of a factor.

Missing out on a TE makes the Hentges departure a little worse, but I'm not sure either of those guys was really the answer.

Here's hoping against hope that Oregon totally craters and Ofodile begins to reconsider his college choice. This team needs receivers badly.

For years we've had large targets on the outside. All the new guys and recruits are 6'1 or smaller, save Emmanuel Hall. This team could really use some size on edge.

Daniel's decommitment hurts more, IMO, due to its possible impact on his brother (and other guys like St. Amour). I'm not sure we get those guys anyway, but this all but ends a shot at his bro.

At this point, this class all hinges on Beckner. Depending on who you look at (247, Rivals, ESPN) he's either the best defensive recruit we've had a shot at since Sheldon or he's the best defensive recruit we've ever had a shot at.

I don't think he's quite the prospect that Sheldon was, but, IMO, he'd easily be the fourth best recruit of the Pinkel era, after DGB, Gabbert, and Sheldon, in that order.

Sometimes it depresses me to think of what Gabbert could have been had Christensen stayed around. He learned so many bad habits from Yost....****.

Going from Yost to Jack Del Rio...God, what a death spiral.

Pinkel pushing for expansion:

Quote:
In the ever-evolving world of college football recruiting, facilities around the SEC are constantly being updated, remodeled and rebuilt in order to “wow” those high-profile high school prospects.

Missouri, who is in the middle of its third season in the SEC, joined the “arms race” by completing a $46.5 million renovation of the east side of Faurot Filed prior to the 2014 season. Now, head coach Gary Pinkel took to his weekly “Tiger Talk” radio appearance to appeal for even further improvements to their facilities.

“The next thing we have to do — and we have to do it fast, OK? We have to do it in the next few years — we have to build a facility down there in the south that wraps around there,” Pinkel said, which was transcribed by the Columbia Tribune. And it’ll have football offices, weight room, new locker room. Our offices are nice, but compared to everyone else in the league, they’re just average.”

“We don’t want to be average at anything,” Pinkel continued. “We need to build that down there at the south end and we don’t need to wait six to eight years to get it done.”

Pinkel has been the head coach at Missouri since 2001 and has done as terrific job coaching up the Tigers during their transition to the SEC. In just two and a half years, Missouri has already achieved a conference championship appearance and is in position for possibly another one this season. Pinkel’s team is playing at a high-level, so he wants the facilities around the program to achieve the same greatness.

“We want to win at a high level, we want to compete at a high level,” Pinkel said. “We want to try and be the best we cane be. Facility-wise, that’s what we have to get done. That’s the next project in my rallying squad. Things we need to get done.”

While it’s not new for coaches to want better facilities, it’s certainly a strong stand by Pinkel in a very public forum. His strategy of angling the need for new facilities to match the high-level on-field by play the team is a particularly savvy move by a veteran head coach.

“We’ve got to keep building. In this league, they’ll run right by you. They’ll be by you. Who wants to be average at anything. Nobody out there does. Mizzou fans don’t want to be average. Let’s make a commitment and get it done.”

I hope Beckner sees that it's a great time for him to come in at Mizzou. There's a chance that Ray leaves after this year and Beckner would absolutely be in the mix for major playing time his freshman year.
