A guy I knew in grad school recently made the news down here for getting busted in a internet sex sting operation for soliticiting sex with a child. He was probably about 40; she was 13. (Couldn't have happened to a more deserving fellow, by the way.) [Don't ask for specifics, the dept. is already embarrassed enough about this guy.]

Now being a libertarian myself, even for me, thirteen seems to be way too young to consent, regardless of the law. I was shocked when I looked up ages of consent...

It is thirteen in Spain and a few other European countries. (Ten in Romania!) I don't get it. These are the same socialist Europeans who think the state must protect their citizens from the evils of "Anglo-Saxon" capitalism, yet don't think 13-year old girls need protection from sexual predators. I don't get it.

You're overreacting. Its perfectly natural for a woman's first time to be under the age of 18, and to be in the hands of some perverted guy 5 years older than her who will crush her heart soon after. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a girl who would say her experience didn't go like that.

You have to remember something when debating this. Other countries don't have the view of sex this country does. This country makes sex out to be dirty and bad, European countries don't do that. It's a completely different environment toward sex and nudity and things of that nature.

This country in many ways is very sexually repressed, I think that's why we have more sex crimes than basically every other country combined.

That was just a response to why the age of consent is lower in those countries. It's viewed completely differently than it is here. Different views, different environment, kids are just raised completely differently.
